Ok, so I am not complaining about my milage, inface I am pleasantly surprised. I bought a 2023 outer banks a little over a week ago with 29000km on it (18000 miles) I replaced my commuter car which i drive 200km (120 miles) to work round trip every day. so with the factory sticker saying 8.4L/100km (28mi/gal) highway, I was on so that is a little more than my fusion got but still not bad. so last set at work (800km / 500miles) I averaged 6.9L/100km or 34 mil/gal US and this last 4 days I used eco mode and got it down to 6.8L/100km or 34.5 mi/gal. these numbers worked out with in 0.05L/100km between hand calculated and the trip computer, so there is no issue there. and for what it is worth I drive 1/2 the distance at 110kph (68mph) and the other half of the trip at 120kph (74.5mph) with a short stretch (2 to 4 miles) with 4 sets of traffic lights and a 50mph speed limit.

has anyone else gotten better milage than its supposed to?
wind influences things, keep that in mind - having posted this disclaimer I can tell you I have achieved 39mpg on my 1.5…

Normal driving though, I normally get 34mpg…

. My take on people who want to drive 10, 20 over the speed limit is they are throwing money out the window. I just give them the road and stay out of the way. Besides that if I stay on the right it's not a problem.
the speeds I said in my original posts are the speed limits for those roads, most go way faster..

What’s the opinion on Eco mode?
Better, worse, no difference?

I tried it a few times and my perception was that it was slightly worse than Normal. Maybe I need to try across an entire tankful.

i think eco mode makes a difference...( i think it simply deadens throttle response and adjusts shift points a bit) I do believe eco mode does much better on the highway or at least when on open roads at 45 mph or over and not a lot of speed changes or having to deal with hills. Around town, not so much. I'm in New England so, pretty hilly.... My mileage with the 1.5 engine has varied between about 25 mpg to 35 mpg depending upon:

1. Driving conditions (normally a mix of back roads and highway with a lean towards more backroad driving. In these instances i'm at around 27.5 (car calculated) but if i do the math it's more like 26-26.5 mpg

2. Fuel used. I do get better mileage if using midgrade gas (89) vs. 87 octane and better mileage still if using 92 or 93 octane. While the difference can be a mile or two per step up in grade of fuel, it isn't worth the added cost in my area.

3. All highway driving - i've gotten about 35 mpg (car calculated) in all highway driving (eco-mode), which was about 34 mpg when i did the math at the next fill up.

4 Driving style. I'm very easy on the throttle, however... put your foot into the BS with the 1.5 and it will suck down the fuel at a pretty good rate. If i drove the BS the way i did my last car (VW gti) i'd probably be getting 20 mpg in the BS. The gti was pretty steady at around 28-30 mpg in "spirited" driving under the same conditions.

Lately, around town, I simply use standard bronco mode with "regular" gas and i'm at about 27-27.5 by the end of a tankful of gas (car calculated). There is better throttle response in the standard bronco mode but the shifting isn't nearly as smooth, from what i've seen. I also notice the BS hunting for gears under certain conditions, especially after getting on the gas after coasting down a relatively short hill. BUT, for driving what is, aerodynamically speaking, a brick with a small and fairly hard working engine, it seems ok to me.

If you believe (as I do) that Eco mode works by reducing throttle response and lowering RPM shift points, then why do you think it would work better on the highway when you are cruising at a steady speed? It seems to me the condition under which such a scheme would work best is when you are accelerating and decelerating, like when driving around town.

I’m in the same camp as Mark. For my Sport it doesn’t seem to make much difference. I don’t bother with it in town as I don’t care for the throttle response. The ES350 on the other hand, it still snappy in ECO mode in town. I do tend to flip it to normal or sport when getting on the freeway if it’s busy.

I get slightly better with eco mode but we are talking about 0.4mi/gal I am in the mountains where I live also so you might get a bit better. to me it seams it would really shine in city driving where your doing stop and go a fair bit, if your like me and get up to highway speed and set the cruise Control then it can only do so much

I do see a small difference using eco mode in LA/SoCal traffic and street driving. I actually, also, like the “feeling” of the throttle (2.0l) in eco mode. As others have noted, it’s not for hills or acceleration, and normal mode makes sense if the freeway’s moving.

I’m doing pretty well on economy right now but this next fill up I might try Eco mode over the whole tank.

I think that in "regular" mode the throttle and transmission response are much more sensitive to inputs and it seems there is more shifting going. Drop a gear, even for a bit and the mpg suffers. In eco mode, the BS seems to require VERY deliberate throttle inputs to elicit a similar response.

Additionally, (and i'm just guessing) that in eco mode the computer may be more likely to allow cylinder deactivation and run on 2 cylinders.. Right or wrong, i do believe that the Eco mode can save fuel.

Thanks for the links, i'll take a look!

it will drop the cyl in normal mode also if conditions are right. what I notice between normal and eco are a change in the fueling, so in normal mode it will slide the M/gal all the way to the right of the scale (for me its L/100km) and its pegged at 30 going up the hill, eco seams to limit the fuel flow to approximately 1/2 of that. you can get the same peddle response but you have to push it a lot farther so I think it is set up to take the lead out of the lead foot haha. I noticed in normal mode it will try correct the speed when on cruse control a lot faster and more aggressively where in eco it lets it drop a bit farther before gradually bringing it back up and on a larger hill where it might hold the set speed in normal I fine in eco its happy to sit 1 to 3km/h below the set point to save the fuel of trying to bring it back while going up a hill.

I’ve experimented with just about every combination of fuel, driving modes, and habits to maximize my fuel efficiency. My daily commute is an 80-mile round trip here in South Florida, with about 90% of that on highways at speeds between 55-60 mph and the remaining 10% in the city. It’s flat here, so the main factor that affects my MPG on a given day is either a tailwind or headwind. To get the most out of my 1.5L engine, I’ve installed a cold air intake (CAI) and a Cat-Back exhaust. I use Amsoil or Motorcraft full synthetic oil along with ProLube for added protection. For fuel, I stick exclusively to Costco or Chevron 93 octane. Every 5,000 miles, I adjust the fuel bias to recalibrate my ECU to reflect actual MPG. Calculating my fuel efficiency manually is simple once you get used to it.

After 46,000 miles, my average is 34 MPG, with highway stretches occasionally hitting 50 MPG, depending on wind conditions. The modifications I made did reduce my city MPG, but since 90% of my driving is on the highway, the trade-off has been worth it. Here’s how I achieve these results:

  1. Driving Style: I prioritize fuel efficiency, though I occasionally switch to Sport Mode for short bursts to clean out the system and get a little speed fix.
  2. Cruise Control: I use it as much as possible.
  3. Modifications: I’ve installed an AFE CAI with a Pro 5 filter and a Cat-Back exhaust.
  4. Oil: I use premium full synthetic engine oil with ProLube.
  5. Maintenance: I change the oil every 5,000 miles, and I drain and fill the transmission, RDU, and PTU every 10,000 miles.
  6. Tire Pressure: I run slightly higher tire pressure at 38 psi.
After 31 months, I’m still not convinced that Eco Mode makes much difference. It softens throttle response and changes the shifting pattern, which might have more of a psychological effect than anything. However, the Auto Stop/Start feature has definitely saved me money—over $200 in fuel costs, and that’s a conservative estimate. I’m sure the actual savings are higher.

Even after the recalls and RDU failure at 35K I still like the BS. I had to change the battery out at 35K also. Being the OB model I like the tech that came with it although for the price Ford could have added a few more bells and whistle's but all in all a good ride.

so I just got back from ontario for 11 days and the rental car they gave me was a 2024 Bronco sport haha. so I I did fuel milage trials over the 3100 km I drove while I was there. at 110 I got 6.5l/100km, at 100 I got 6.3l/100km and at 90 I got 6.0l/100km thats still rolling hills so at 90kph (50mph) in a flat enviorment with no wind I suspect it could get into the 5's . now I am going to upgrade the tires on mine this week and see how much that kills my milage.....

I have a 5 Star tune (perf 93) and getting a combined 28mpg with my 1.5 in "normal" mode
