and…
I wish I had seen the pencil holder installation video. It took me 90 minutes to do the install. :D

My ambitions are larger then my garage and my skill. Today I set out to install several intake side mods, troubleshoot why my passenger side Tectico side marker stopped working, and remove the tow hooks.

I started with removing the stock Airbox and investigating how brave I was with regard to getting to the throttlebody and intake manifold. Its not the first time I've tried to install the Boomba Racing intake manifold spacer (Which is for the Maverick 2.0) and this is the second time I'm indefinitely suspending the project. The first time (literally a year ago) failed because I had the wrong bit size for installing the packaged replacement bolts, which ended up rounding the inside of the hexkey bolt, so I removed it and installed it with back with the O.E. bolts. This time I had 4 of the 5 bolts out and found out bolt 5 (on the drivers side and in a hellacious location) had rounded during reinstall and when I tried scorched earth using Extractor heads, none of them got purchase and there was no way to get leverage due to the radiator fan being right infront of the working space. So like any self respecting person, I reinstalled the other 4 O.E. bolts and put the Manifold spacer back in the Shame pile of my garage to give it another go in another year or so.

So with one failure out of the way I returned to removing the the rest of the intake piping for the S&B air intake I was planning to install. Lo and behold I encountered another brick wall as I needed a 5/8" Quick Disconnect tool. Couldn't take the BS because there was a big whole where the stock air box was so I had to drive out to Advanced Autoparts to pick up some tools that were significantly cheaper online. But the BS was sticking halfway out of the garage and I couldn't take the Amazon delivery gamble that it would deliver Monday. So, took my wife's car as she was busy playing on the computer and ran out and got my tools to continue my suffering, a journey that is common when working on the Beetle but new for the Bronco Sport.

Back at it with stubborn intentions I decided it was time for a win, and sitting on my kitchen counter for 2 months has been a 30mm deep socket impact socket head (one of the few times I was able to predict a problem ahead of time) so it was officially time to remove the tow hooks, and for once things went well. All I had to do was remove 4 two-stage plastic fasteners in both wheel well in order to pull the wheel well liner out enough to reach the 30mm bolt on the back of the two tow hooks. Rear mega bolt off, all that was left were the two bolts right at the front of each hook, easily reachable through the opening for the hooks, however there isn't a ton of space to use a ratcheting socket or a ratcheting wrench, but I was technically making progress it was just slow, and loud, because the wrench was ringing the hook like a dinner bell.

Hooks off it was back to the Air intake. The plastic quick disconnect tool did its job and I continued to remove all the sensors. Armed with a youtube video from S&B of them installing it on a Maverick and a very detailed PDF with color pictures from S&B o continued forward not knowing what hell awaited me. One inconspicuous part of the instructions and video detailed loosening the hose clamp that connects the Intake to the turbo, its at the back of the engine and the way the hose clamp was positioned, there was only one way to to loosen the hose clamp and there wasn't room. I'm not a small person, not muscular per say either, but I have literally 50+ cuts and scrapes on both of my arms, mostly knuckles and forearms, and id say half of them drew blood. I couldn't stop, but forward was painful and slow.

I'm not into lying to make myself look better, I started at 2pm, it was 11pm when I finally got to test drive the car to make sure everything was put back together properly and it wasn't going to throw codes. The new intake takes up every once of space in the engine bay, it's huge. The product replaces everything starting behind the fan shroud and up to the turbo. (Below is a comparison of the fan shroud connection replacement part, the O.E. part receives air from about 1/3rd its length , the new part the entire length is intake)

If you have the Steeda Cross brace, you will need to essentially fully remove it for this install. The thing fits, barely. And again I'm not going to lie, the driver side shroud mount bracket is not attached to the car, it's sitting about 1/2" above the hole it's supposed to secure to. See, the tricky thing is, the S&B intake has no flex tube till the downpipe to the turbo. Which means the three major pieces (Shroud connection, Airbox, primary intake tube) all connect together in one massive (not flexing) piece that dodges, ducks, dips dives and dodges and ungodly amount of pipes, sensors, hoses and wiring. I couldn't get that one tab to connect, but there is not a single piece that is loose or has room to give. It's secure and I'm not worried about it. To be honest, I can't even blame S&B, I would not hesitate to believe I screwed something up during the install. The video was great, the PDF was great, it just didn't work out smoothly for me. Looks good all things final, window is a fingerprint fiend and I had to secure a couple things with zipties because of the cross brace and secure the functionally useless proprod because I installed gas struts a while ago, I probably should just remove it entirely, but I'm leaving it there incase its broken down somewhere and I need to hit things with a bar of metal, I'm not psychic, I have no idea what that scenario could be, but it's better to have it and not need it then the opposite.

Didn't take pictures pictures of it, but the Tectico side marker on the passenger side positive and negative cables were torn in two. I couldn't begin to guess how that happened, it didn't look like chewing, but it is what it is. fixed the problem with some of my wiring horde I've amassed for the Beetle project. I'd hate wiring less if my crimping tool did its job. took less then a half hour and got it working again.

Test drive went well, no errors, no faults. I don't have good audio recording equipment and it had literally been 9 hours since I drove it last so I can't speak for the significance of the increase of intake noise, and I only drove it for a half hour so I can't speak for any impact (positive or negative) on MPG. And just to head it off at the start, no, I am not throwing it on a dyno to prove I didn't waste money. Like the VTA adaptor, I'm doing this for my own enjoyment, I'm doing it to make me smile (except no smiling tonight, today sucked)

Washed her up this morning after a 2700 mile road trip. I need to get something to remove bug guts from the hood front edge and the top right above the windshield. The BSport is an amazing vehicle to drive at 80 mph which was the speed of most drivers the last two days. No noticeable wind noise from the newly installed cross bars and we pulled into one gas station with the low fuel light on. Two warnings, one at 50 miles to empty then another at 25 miles to empty and stopped at the gas pump with 17 miles to empty. I topped up the 16 gallon tank with 15 gallons of fuel so it was getting close. Just passed the 5000 mile mark so will be scheduling the first oil change this week.

Installed the Redline gas springs for the hood. Without them I would let the hood drop the last few inches to close tight on it's own. I'll have to keep a clean microfiber cloth handy for closing now (to avoid smudging the hood). ;)

What did I do to my Bronco today?
As always I kissed it good morning. Then, a bit later, I drove it to and from the library.
Until the temperature humidity index stays below 100 degrees here in North Carolina, my exciting life remains on hold. ?
What’s a library? ?

A library is the place where one goes to read Popular Science , Popular Mechanics, that one used to subscribe via Publishers Clearing House. Also to read newspapers so one doesn't have to pay for a subscription and deal with bundlng them for recycling pickup.

Day 2 with a very short list. Put the hooks back on after a paint job. Two layers or rattlecan followed by sanding followed by a final layer of rattlecan. Install was as annoying as taking them off as there is little to no room to work on the two front bolts on each side but I'm happy with the results. Bonus picture of all the O.E. pieces removed from the S&B Intake install

I so want to do this to my tow hooks. I have all the time, just not sure about the motivation. I don’t think the prep and painting will be a problem. It’s the removing them and putting them back on.

For my what did I do today, I installed the Tectico side/turn lights. The hardest step was removing the OEM plates. Fortunately I have small hands. Unfortunately I don’t have great grip strength. I tested function before final snap in. I still need to cover some wires, but I need more wrap for that.
Thank you to whoever created the first harness. I’m sorry I’ve forgotten who it was, but your photos saved my install with the Tectico harness. ❤

Next project will either be grill lights or hard wiring the dash (front and rear) cameras.

I didn't want to remove them either. Just paint them while they are still on. Takes ten minutes to make sure you've got them isolated.
