I believe the navigation downloads used to be free, and now we have to pay for a one-time digital download. That's crazy! But understand that Ford's trying to make money out of us. What are Gracenotes? Is that a media player file? Do we know what specific changes are in this version?
The map updates are transparent to a cell phone, and I don't pay for them directly (except for the monthly cell phone bill ).

@thomasm23 are you aware of the set of known solutions when an owner uses Master Reset and the screen freezes on the master reset and never finishes?

A Sync Reset works to restore access but whenever Master Reset is performed master reset freezes. (In this case I think they did the “quick” Sync reset and did not perform the “2 minute” Sync reset)

Do you know what will cause a Master Reset to freeze and never finish?
I was reading in another forum about the Master Reset freezing. Preforming a quick reset seems to clear some of the logs sitting in the rwdata partition. Someone else recommended doing this.

This is why I did multiple quick resets by holding down the required buttons for 2 minutes. The Master Reset probably installs new information in the rwdata partition. With no room left, the Master Reset will hang and not be able to complete.

So I have the issue with the master reset freezing. You are saying perform several soft resets in a row to possibly clear enough data? I've tried 2 soft resets and it still didn't work. Do you think doing more than 2 might eventually work?

Hold the soft reset buttons down for 2 minutes. Do not release for 2 minutes. The screen will go dark and restart many times.

Why do you believe that the maps update will require you to pay a one-time digital download fee?

Short story: I encourage people to upgrade maps. Sync updates haven't done much for me over the years, but map updates are significantly better every time.

Long story: I've posted this elsewhere before, but I'll repeat myself here. On my 2019 F-350, the mapset was so awful that it was unusable. It's the only navigation system I have ever used that was consistently wrong. It wasn't just lacking street information, it would send me to wrong locations. Bizarre. Even when it wasn't wrong, it would do silly things. Because a section of I-25 had an HOV lane, it treated the entire freeway as a toll road ... so, if you had the "avoid toll road" setting on, it would avoid the entirety of I-25.

I was north of Denver, CO, so not a remote area that might be lacking in recent information. I used it for a few months until I learned to not trust it. Then, I just used my phone for a while.

After updating the maps, the navi system sprang to life. It's taken me years to build my trust and I'll still double-check my routes to Google Maps even to this day. But, it's been rock solid after the map update. So, my advice is to always update maps.

Why Ford Navi?
As stated above, so that you can navigate when cell phone coverage dies. My experience with downloading Google Maps before I start out has been a bit buggy. It's simply not easy enough for me to do regularly. And, when I'm camping and such, I just can't be bothered to download a few new map areas as part of my prep (and delete them later to free up space).

In-vehicle navi is just easier. It's right there and ready to go. It doesn't depend on cellular networks. I also like the way it integrates better than CarPlay. For example, CarPlay hides the ambient temperature.

Anyway, is it necessary? No, absolutely not. But, like a lot of the other options we all choose, it can be more convenient to some. I'm one of those people. I also hate moonroofs, but appreciate that others love them.

Some people say Nav map digital downloads are free for 5 years and others say one digital download is free

when I bought my ‘22 Badlands with the premium package including navigation the documentation said free map (digital) updates for 5 years but after I installed NA 2 22 this week the website said the one free digital download was used up. Ford isn’t very consistent on the topic of Nav map costs (except the purchased USB version being currently $40).

Can anyone tell me why I need Nav functions in the infotainment system when I have a smart phone with three different Map apps that all work fine?

I often use the Ford Nav when I am mountain biking in a remote area and have poor signal on my phone. I've found it's more reliable to at least get me routed out of the area.

I use a wireless carplay adapter, so I just need to unplug the dongle from the USB port to use the built in nav.

I'm not sure I just saw that on the Ford navigation website and it's pretty new to me. So I don't know if the website's still being updated. I work for Amazon Flex as a contractor so yes I definitely agree since it improves the experience.

I did the map download today and installed it.

I'm also not the most computer savvy senior around. I did get it downloaded after a couple of attempts.

The download seems overly complicated, but that's just me.

It took about 40 minutes to install in the Sport without any issues. It shows map version 2 22 installed, which is the new version, but the Gracenote version didn't change after updating.

Don't know if that's something I did wrong in the initial download, or if the Gracenote wasn't suppose to change.

Who knows how much the maps are updated, but it's done now, and I hope I don't have any Sync problems down the road.

You'll be the 1st to know.

Sync 3.4 22251.

I installed the Nav 2 22 update using USB in about 30 minutes. Everything worked flawlessly. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

This was my third download and installation of a Nav update and like all the previous ones it was free. At the time of purchase I was told that I would get all updates free for the first five years and so far that has been the case.

One thing that is "ifi" is the auto's map SW, pertaining to campers. If you have an RV, make sure you get RV map SW, as the ones that come from Ford or other auto manufacturers do not take into count the height of an RV.
For cell phones, you can download RV friendly maps, that bypass routes with low bridges, overheads, etc.
