What's the difference in paying $40?
For $40, Ford will send you a physical USB stick with the files pre-loaded. Plug-and-play. Some people have difficulty formatting their USB stick and dropping the downloaded files in the proper location. The maps are 12 GB, too, so some people don't want to download these files. My dad, for example, would be better served paying the $40. That's not a criticism, just some people are not as computer savvy.

Takes about 3 seconds to format a USB stick. It takes about 1 second to drop the files onto that stick. However, it probably will take an hour or so to download 12 GB, unless you're on a corporate-level internet plan. But, again, there are many people who don't want to fiddle around with formatting and moving files around.

It will take 1 hour for download to computer. Additional 1 hour to copy files to USB flash drive. Additional 3rd hour to update vehicle with USB flash drive.

Don't count that 3rd hour. There's nothing magical about the Ford USB stick. It will take the same amount of time to update your BS, regardless of the source of the USB stick. So, when comparing the two paths, ignore that 3rd hour you included.

This update includes new maps and updated Gracenote version. To get this update use the following link:

https://www.ford.com/support/sync-maps-updates/

This is a large download to your Windows device or your Mac. Make sure you have a fast reliable connection. It may take over an hour to complete. Make sure your device does not go into sleep mode. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.

You will need a USB-A or USB-C flash drive that is 16GB or larger. The flash drive will need to be reformatted to exFAT.

FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS and copy files to USB flash drive. This may take up to an hour.

We are now at 2 hours.

Time to update the vehicle. This will take an additional hour. Plan when taking a long drive. The vehicle must be running the entire time.

Remove any USB cables from the ports.

If you are experiencing any of the Sync 3.4 Build 22251 issues like rwdata, you will need to do the following. (If you are not experiencing any of the Build 22251 issues, go ahead and insert the flash drive and follow instructions.)

Note: This will clear all your SiriusXM stations saved. You will need to save them again.

Press and hold the volume/power button and the seek/forward button on the head unit. Do not release for 2 minutes. The screen will go black and restart many times.

Go to your iPhone or Android phone and open FordPass app. Deactivate the vehicle from FordPass.

After 2 minutes, let the screen come back to life. Go to settings and remove any phones paired via Bluetooth. Go to Apple CarPlay settings and remove any devices. Go to Android Auto settings and remove any devices.

Under Settings, General: Press Reset, Master Reset. Let the head unit restart.

Insert the flash drive in the ports under the climate controls. FOLLOW ON-SCREEN INSTRUCTIONS

Do not remove the flash drive. Do not turn off the engine.

This will take around an hour to complete.

My Nav Maps are now NA 2 22

I came up with this procedure after experiencing the MEM_ERR03 error.

This update will not update Sync 3.4 to a later build. As far as I can tell, this update does not correct the rwdata issues. We are still looking forward to a new build of Sync 3.4 to be released directly from Ford.

Is it a cool Ford USB stick?
Nothing cool about it except the USB Device does say “Sync”… Ford sent me 3 of them lol (for free). It was during the time NA 2 21 first came out and neither the download nor the USB Device worked for the ‘22 model year bronco sports.

After the 2nd bad install i was able to diagnose the issue Fords Nav vendor was making and they fixed the problem.

Now I have 3 32G USB Devices and one 64G and a whole pile of smaller sized USB Devices.

Went through the download process but I was unable to install: "ERROR LST_005"'

Apparently I received the wrong license file for Sync3 Version3.4 .
Anybody else had this problem? If yes, were you able to get the correct one? How?
Thanks

Why do you believe that the maps update will require you to pay a one-time digital download fee?

Short story: I encourage people to upgrade maps. Sync updates haven't done much for me over the years, but map updates are significantly better every time.

Long story: I've posted this elsewhere before, but I'll repeat myself here. On my 2019 F-350, the mapset was so awful that it was unusable. It's the only navigation system I have ever used that was consistently wrong. It wasn't just lacking street information, it would send me to wrong locations. Bizarre. Even when it wasn't wrong, it would do silly things. Because a section of I-25 had an HOV lane, it treated the entire freeway as a toll road ... so, if you had the "avoid toll road" setting on, it would avoid the entirety of I-25.

I was north of Denver, CO, so not a remote area that might be lacking in recent information. I used it for a few months until I learned to not trust it. Then, I just used my phone for a while.

After updating the maps, the navi system sprang to life. It's taken me years to build my trust and I'll still double-check my routes to Google Maps even to this day. But, it's been rock solid after the map update. So, my advice is to always update maps.

Why Ford Navi?
As stated above, so that you can navigate when cell phone coverage dies. My experience with downloading Google Maps before I start out has been a bit buggy. It's simply not easy enough for me to do regularly. And, when I'm camping and such, I just can't be bothered to download a few new map areas as part of my prep (and delete them later to free up space).

In-vehicle navi is just easier. It's right there and ready to go. It doesn't depend on cellular networks. I also like the way it integrates better than CarPlay. For example, CarPlay hides the ambient temperature.

Anyway, is it necessary? No, absolutely not. But, like a lot of the other options we all choose, it can be more convenient to some. I'm one of those people. I also hate moonroofs, but appreciate that others love them.
We were allies up untill "i also hate moonroofs." ;)

Called Customer Support (agent was outstanding!)and found out that the name of the downloaded license file for version 3.4 is correct and I should disregard the information at: https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/sync/troubleshooting/why-am-i-getting-the-lst_005-error-when-updating-the-map/

Everything appeared working as expected after that (so far ;)) .

For someone who is not overly computer literate I have a question. Can I make a appointment at my Ford dealer and have them download the new version of sync and the new version of navigation? I would pay them for this service.

Just buy the $40 Nav update USB stick. Simple install.

In terms of computer literacy, my opinion is thus:

Macs are a pain in the ass to format the USB correctly for updates, and I had a significant amount of trouble formatting the USB correctly (map update available, was on a trip with only my Mac [no PC]).

If you have a PC, Syn3 Updater makes the process dead easy. It will download the Sync 3 update (if applicable) and map update for you, format the USB drive you select, and place the files on it for you. Dead simple and free.

If you don't own a computer, or own a Mac - I could see potentially paying for the map update. But on Windows the formatting is very easy, even easier if you let Syn3 Updater handle the whole thing for you.

Just my two cents.

The steps using the Ford website to download either a SYNC3 update or a Nav Maps update to a USB Device on Windows PC/laptop could not be any easier.

Let’s hope Ford releases the update to 3.4.22251 soon and that the install instructions for that are flawless for vehicles experiencing the low and out of memory issues (22251).

Nice that you like Cyan Labs but I will not use Cyan Labs for my own reasons. Cheers!
