@thomasm23 after reading through a Ford TSB (TSB 22-2254) and more posts I’m switching my vote to the Sync problems you and others are having is due to the automatic software update maybe even occurred due to the (bogus) 23088 update but not sure about that. I disabled automatic software updates on my bronco sport last year due to its possible issues. The TSB is from summer 2022 I think which is about when I first started seeing people report the issues you have. That explains why replacing the APIM solved their problem because the APIM just needed to be reflashed.

I am in agreement with the hardware. Replacing the unit just gets you a fresh software install.

The issue will probably reappear.

Here is the most complete version of TSB 22-2254 that I have access to but read it quick because often the full TSB text gets removed. Sounds like your issue and contains the procedure the dealership is to follow to correct the bad software install on the APIM. Also check to see if you have automatic software updates set on your Bronco Sport and consider disabling that.

With all the issues with this update, has Ford removed it as an update?

If you are referring to 22251 update, it’s the latest (for most?) and although cyanlabs reports issues I and many others have no issues with 22251.

If you are referring to 23088 update, cyanlabs reports issues as does many other Ford groups for vehicles such as the F150, Explorer. The 23088 update does not show for me when I check the Ford Sync software update website and I would not install 23088.

my current guess is those that have 22251 with automatic software update enabled and 23088 (which i believe is a bogus update) is automatically installed is when issues occur but this is an unproven guess. See this post for more info: https://www.broncosportforum.com/forum/threads/sync-3-4-build-23088-possibly-is-bogus-and-automatic-updates-might-corrupt-apim.8703/

Edit: on an F150 group, an owner posted the following but here I added the words in parentheses for context:

I'm betting (my vehicle) got or partially got this 23088 update over Wifi just before (my issues) started, and that it's (23088) a bad update.”

When I get home tonight, I'll go into setup and disable auto updates to play it safe.

According to Ford's support site online, I have the 22251 SYNC update installed in my Badlands, and it's up to date. We've been using SYNC-equipped cars for 7+ years now, and any time Ford has released a SYNC update in the past this site would show "Update Available" for our vehicles based on VIN. Since there is currently no update available for my VIN I think it's safe to say that 22251 is the latest. I wouldn't worry about an auto-install of 23088 until it becomes available for the Bronco Sport.

OK you brainiacs, I have a 2022 Big Bend with co-pilot 360+, bought January 2022. My sync 3 is still running 21194. Auto update is on but I have not had any update offers from Ford since purchased and when Isearchfor updatesit willlook likeit'ssearchingbut after 15-20 minutes it says I'm up to date. My Sirius xm gives updates and that's it. Do I just have a lower level system? I'm going to the dealer for another issue today. Should I ask them about updating sync?

I would say that while sometimes Ford is slow to release updates for vehicles, I generally wouldn't use the Cyanlabs updater to update software version unless one of the following is true:
  1. You are performing a downgrade (which Cyanlabs Syn3 Updater permits, but Ford website doesn't).
  2. The update changelog for the newer version not available for your vehicle fixes a specific issue.
  3. (Which shouldn't apply to the Bronco Sport) - you have performed a Sync/Sync 2 (MyFord Touch) to Sync 3 upgrade, and there's no other way to update the APIM other than using Syn3 updater as Ford site would have no updates for your VIN.
  4. (Which won't apply to the BS at this time as latest map update is Q2 2021) - you want to update the map of your BS without paying $40 to Ford - Syn3 updater will do this for free, with or without a software upgrade.

OTA upgrades haven't worked for me in the BS BL even on WiFi, I would just get a 16GB flash drive, download the update on a Windows PC, put it on that, and plug it into your BS. It's also much faster than the OTA upgrade as you perform the extraction of the compressed files on your much more powerful PC rather than offloading it to the radio as part of the upgrade process.

If you don't have a Windows PC your dealer can upgrade the radio but they will likely charge you for that.

let’s get back to OPs issue at the top of the thread.

while a partial install of 22088 or a full install of 23088 is one possible explanation that is consistent with many F150, Explorer reports in late April/early May 2023 of issues matching OPs, there is a separate forum topic on 23088.

And there are separate forum topics regarding how to install a Sync update whether over WiFi or USB or cyanlabs.

Does anyone have ideas related to the original OP issue ?

I haven't noticed any issues on my 2022 Big Bend running 22251 (downloaded from Ford and installed via USB), but I'll go change some settings and see if they revert to default. Cheers!

As another datapoint, I’m also getting similar issues with 22251 which I’ve had installed for over a month now in my Ranger.
I actually just posted this on Ranger5g yesterday, the problem just started a few days ago:

my ‘19 Lariat with Nav.

A few other tidbits:
- I’ve been on version 22251 for about 2 months now and no problems
- I always turn the radio off before shutting off the truck, but now either of the following occurs:
—- If I was previously listening to an AM channel, the radio comes on immediately when I start the truck (even though was previously off), or
—- If I was previously listening to Sirius, the radio doesn’t automatically turn on but when I turn it on it starts at channel 0 (the radio ID as indicated above).

Very odd that this is happening to more than just me and all of a sudden for us having this happen. I don’t do automatic updates either.”

That is exactly what is happening with my vehicle. There has to be others than just us, on this forum, that are experiencing these issues.

Yes sir and I think i read your Ranger5g post because it sounds familiar. It is certainly not odd and lots of Ford owners started getting similar issues relatively recently.

Have you seen TSB 22-2254 SYNC 3 - Various SYNC Symptoms yet?

See the following post for more info and a link to TSB 22-2254:
https://www.broncosportforum.com/forum/threads/sync-3-4-build-23088-possibly-is-bogus-and-automatic-updates-might-corrupt-apim.8703/

You may well need to schedule an appointment with your dealership and see if they can reflash your APIM with 22251 however it’s also possible but less likely that your APIM has gone bad and needs to be replaced or another module needs to be updated.
