EDITED 7/22/2023:

some owners choose to always leave automatic updates disabled so it’s a choice every owner can make based on their experience and information.

Original May 7, 2023 post:

At this time I recommend you do not install SYNC Version 3.4 Build 23088 and recommend disabling automatic software updates to prevent the possibility that Build 23088 gets automatically installed.

There maybe an issue with SYNC Version 3.4 Build 23088 (or with other updates) that may corrupt the Sync software installed on the APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module).

Owners have reported various issues (see links below).

TSB 22-2254 SYNC 3 - Various SYNC Symptoms, SYNC Screen Flicker, Echo/Robotic Voice Concerns, Temperature Not Displayed In Pop Up Screen
https://community.cyanlabs.net/uploads/short-url/xzlS3pmnyk4POB8ROhWjOu1fqOk.pdf

Recommend using the 8” Display under Settings to disable automatic software updates. Instead manually install your own Sync updates over USB “awhile” after a Sync 3.4 update comes out after checking to be sure there aren’t issues with the Sync update.

FYI, this cyanlabs post claims 23088 is same as 22251:

Would this automatically update over my home’s Wi-Fi at night? Or does it use the BS’s cellular radio?

Over WiFi .. day or night. When the vehicle is parked and in range of the WiFi you programmed in.

Hi there,
just read this post and rushed out to turn off automatic update.
However, I checked the current version and it is already 3.4 ... and I did NOT experience any
weird behaviour at all ...??? . Outer Banks, 2021

There are different build numbers for SYNC V3.4. The build number at issue is 23088.

My SYNC 3.4 is build 21098. I got notice back in February of an update ready to install. Living in a condo, it’s difficult, so I always ask my dealer to run any available updates when I’m in for service. I was in last week and they advised me that my system is up-to-date 🤷‍♀️

Update May 9, 2023: as of today there remain strong indications that SYNC Version 3.4 Build 23088 is a duplicate (identical) version of SYNC Version 3.4 Build 22251 and if Build 23088 gets installed automatically or is partially installed, this could exhibit the issues stated in TSB 22-2254 SYNC 3 - Various SYNC Symptoms.

TSB 22-2254 is not specific to Build 23088.

I will provide a future update once the issue with SYNC Version 3.4 Build 23088 is resolved by Ford or you can monitor the evolving situation yourself at cyanlabs or on the F150 and other Ford vehicle Forums where Build 23088 is discussed.

Whether you decide to enable or disable the Automatic Updates feature on your Bronco Sport is of course a personal decision. Here is a Pro/Con if you choose to disable Automatic Updates.

Automatic System Updates Disabled Pro/Con:

Pro: you control when software updates are downloaded over WIFi (or via USB for the case of SYNC and Navigation (if applicable)) to your vehicle.

Con: you have to remember to initiate software updates or schedule service with your dealership for this.

On the 8” Display, under Settings, this information is provided for Automatic System Updates:

Automatic System Updates
Enables the vehicle to download the latest available system software features, enhancements, and security updates when connected to a Wi-Fi network. Vehicle information needed to perform the update will be sent to Ford U.S. Data charges may apply. Certain updates may be possible through the FordPass app. See your Owner's Manual for more details.

SYNC Version 3.4 Build 22251 is the current version available on the Ford website as of a few days ago when I checked. Next time you can let the dealership know or have them check for a later version.

With your VIN you can check for updates yourself so you are armed with the info when you visit your dealership.

I still can't get Ford to believe mine has 22251 installed, so I'm probably good.

my bronco sport also has 22251 installed and says up-to-date … the Ford website continues to say 22251 is available to be installed but it is a known issue Ford has been aware of for more than 8 months and no fix yet. Maybe @Ford Motor Company can provide an update on when the issue will be fixed for the Ford website.

@thekingprawn .. just curious do you have a ‘22 or a ‘23?

Sync 3.4 Build 23088 has been added to CyanLabs. New maps for navigation will come shortly.

I will be waiting for Ford to officially offer the new build and updated maps.

Hopefully, this fixes the defaulting issues.

I have a '21 with 22251 installed. I installed it manually using a USB drive. The report-back-to-mama function didn't work on mine either--after installation Ford's support site still reported my system out of date. I stopped checking it. At some point over the next few months my car must have successfully phoned home and reported my system status, because it now says my system is up-to-date. I did a SYNC master reset during that time, and that may have been what forced the communication between my car and Ford's system, but I'm not certain about that.
