Is there such a thing as premium/high test amps?

Sure is. It’s when the power company only varies your voltage and amps by no more then 2% instead of the normal 10%. It’s like the difference between non-ethanol and ethanol gas.

The 1.5 needs every advantage it can get, premium is the way to go and owners manual corroborates such.
The 1.5 isn't that bad, why people go on about it I don't know. I don't think people can wrap their heads around the fact that it's a 3 cylinder. Is it fast, no, but it gets the job done just fine. Premium did zilch for performance. Even in hot weather, I doubt the butt dyno will register anything at all. Better off removing excess weight and passengers, that will make a noticeable difference.

I find the 1.5 perfect for my needs. Even the 2.0’s aren’t fast, it’s a brick on wheels.

For a 3 cylinder, it’s got some pick up, especially in sport mode. I averaged close to 40mpg on a trip today. Can’t ask for more.

I typically split the difference and get 89 octane (mid-grade).

As far as the performance of the 1.5L, it has 181 HP. We had a 1997 Ford Thunderbird with a 4.6L V-8 that generated 205 HP and was a land yacht. Ecoboost tech is the real deal. My F-150 with the 3.5L is stronger and better than the 5.0L. Try not to get too hung up on the 3 cyl issue. 181 horses is perfectly sufficient for a vehicle this size.

I just passed 22K on my BS OB. Since new I have tried 87, 89 and 91 octane, both ethanol and ethanol free fuel. I track milage and mpg every at tank fill-up. Here is what I found.

The engine needs to be fully broke in before the numbers start to show a pattern. Generally 3K is good but 6K is better. After that the difference in types of fuel and octane becomes more noticeable both at the peddle and on paper.

For daily commuter 87E is fine, inexpensive and easy to find. Higher octane fuel gradually increases mpg. If towing or hauling cargo and people then the higher octane fuel is better, especially in hotter climates. The best performance and mpg is from ethanol free, 90 or better.

The caveat being the price is higher and E free is harder to find. The increase in mpg and towing performane comes at a price. In my case I noticed the engine runs smoother as well. Is it worth the extra cost, from the standpoint of economics probably not. From a performance point of view definitely noticeable. Bottom line is what you are using your BS for and if you are willing to pay extra.

I will continue with E free 90 if the price stays within my comfort zone. If we have another spike in fuel costs I mught go back down to E87. I have to say once you get used to the little extra performance and mpg its harder to go back to 87, its that noticeable.

Where I live 87 is mid range and I've put nothing but this (Shell) in since day one. Average 26-28 mpg consistently and, I find the 1.5L 3cyl, remarkably stout for its size and what it has to work with, a brick! A great looking brick, I might add.

I gotta say, I haven't tried the higher grade gas (91) here because of the cost and the type of driving I do which is mostly city and county roads where speeds are generally 35-55 mph tops. I don't think using the higher grade would benefit me.
