So What Did You Learn to Drive In?

This is from the days when you had Driver's Ed (classroom, mandatory for everyone) and Driver's Training (on the road, needed your parents to sign off). And California didn't suck.

In my case, it was in 1971 in a '71 Ford Galaxie 500 Police Interceptor provided to the school by the same local Ford dealer that did San Diego PD's fleet sales. Our instructor was also the SDPD driving instructor for new cops. For 15-year old me, it was a blast.

His instruction was pretty much the same he gave to new officers, minus some of the more extreme maneuvers. He sure as hell yelled at us like rookies. And after 54 years behind the wheel, I still get new passengers saying, "Dude, you drive like a cop." I'm also still trying to figure out exactly what that means.

1955 Chevy with a three on the tree. My best friend’s dad owned a body shop. It was his to drive on the property even though we were not old enough to drive on the road. That started my off roading adventures. We had a blast in that thing. The only caveat was it had to be kept relatively clean so mudding was never a thing for me.

First thing I drove was a horse pulled cart when I was a kid. Then I drove a forklift for years before I got my driver's license at 31. I mostly learned with my first car, 2011 Fiesta 5 speed hatch. My only preparation was playing gran turismo and forza motorsport. ?

In Driver's Ed, I believe it was a Dodge Dynasty and the instructor was an older lady that had been teaching the course for years.

At home, it was either a 1988 Nissan Sentra or a 1992 Pathfinder. Both Nissans were MT.

The good old days.I was 8 when my brother 12 got his license .The guy from the DMV ask my dad how old i was. He said 8 . the guy said close enough....
