What Was Your Father's Old Car?

I remember a ‘55 Ford Station Wagon, a ‘59 Rambler Station Wagon, followed by another Rambler Station Wagon, this time a ‘63. Then it was a ‘68 Ford Galaxy 500 4dr hardtop. Next was a ‘73 Mercury Monteago 2dr, followed by a ‘79 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon and finally a ‘87 Crown Vic. Growing up in Texas, we always had a pickup too. There was a beat to hell ‘52 Chevy 5 window C10 pickup, a ‘64 F100 step-side, followed by a 77 F150 and finally an ‘88 Chevy S10 that I inherited when he passed.

I remember going to the DMV when he registered the’52 Chevy. They asked him what color it was and he said “Rust.”

My Father (RIP) didn't drive during my lifetime and I'm 63. I vaguely remember something about when he was in his teens he ran over a little boy whom was playing in the street and had buried himself with the fallen leaves.

Like several replies on here, my step-father wasn't a car guy. What I remembered was a company car that was a 63 Ford Galaxy that I almost crashed doing a spin-out on a remote country road.

My dad absolutly was a car guy!! Sadly no pictures, but he had a 1977 911S, 1981 911 SC and a 1979 930 Turbo, my mom drove 3 series BMWs. He also had a full size K5 Blazer that I loved!!!

Another story. My twin brother and I, including the local neighborhood guys we hung out with, started getting the car bug when we were around 14 years old.

My dad was never into cars much and had never bought a new car in his life. That is until we were around 16 years old and had our drivers' licenses.

We were on the lower income spectrum I would say. Dad was very frugal, worked very hard for his paycheck.

Somehow, over a few months we talked him into buying a new 1964 Pontiac Tempest LeMans sport coupe. 326 V8 with a few added options. Brownish tan in color, bucket seats. It was out of place for our neighborhood for sure. It was a definitely a looker.

He had it till the day he died 13 years later. The only new car he ever owned. We still talk about how we had pulled that off and got him to spend his money.

The car > Not my Dad's oldest car but one of my favorites, a white '65 Chevy Nova SS with red leather interior and center console shifter between the bucket seats.

One scary memory > Our family did several car trips from Toronto to Myrtle Beach, S.C. in the late '60s. On one of these trips , I was asleep in the back seat as we traveled on an interstate south of Washington . All of a sudden someone in the car yelled something and I looked out the rear window to see clouds of smoke trailing behind us. Dad pulled the Nova over to the shoulder and we soon realized that it wasn't on fire. We limped along the shoulder to the next interchange and service station where a mechanic quickly found a loose oil filter and had us back on our way !

GM experts in the forum > Would that have been a small V8 in that Nova ?

Dad's car when he met mom was a '73 Mustang Fastback in Bright Green Gold (Snot)
Then somewhere between then and '94 was

'79 Ranger (blue and white)
an unknown 2-door grand prix, (mom and dad always just talk about "the Grand Prix")
a 1989 Grand Marquis Colony Park in blue and woodgrain

then in '94 he ordered his first new ride, a Silverado 1500 Extended Cab Long Bed in Dark Navy Blue, which he kept until my younger brother needed a ride about 4 years ago.

Currently, he has a 2017 F250 Super Duty Crew XLT, (gas, not diesel) and we're going aftermarket to upgrade it together because he found out about Android Auto and backup cameras and wanted a "bigass screen so he can see what the ass is doing when he loads a camper"

Thank you. It was his pride and joy. He did most of the work on it including welding, painting and changing the cab and engine though he lost his left arm years ago in an industrial accident. Now that he is gone I drive it to honor him. I have also spent a small fortune on it but that goes with the old car hobby.

With a big family, cars are not high priority, just functional transport for the whole crew. The first car my parents had that I remember in the mid 60's was a VW van. My Dad stacked wood planks across the back so we could sleep on long drives on our family camping trips. Then it was a Ford station wagon, until my oldest brother crashed it. Next was an Oldsmobile Vistacruiser station wagon with sun roof and "transom windows", all of which were fixed and didn't open. This is the car we drove out to Colorado carting our whole family of 12: Mom and Dad in the front seat with one kid between them and a 2 y/o on my Mom's lap, five kids in the back seat, and three kids in the third row seat. We trailed an old wooden box trailer for camping gear and luggage. Then my parents became a two car family with Mom driving the station wagon and Dad driving a Chevy Vega to work. Vega traded in for a Ford Fairmont, station wagon traded in for a Mercury Marquis. The Marquis was bare bones no frills but that car could haul ass! They downsized after that and drove a smaller Mercury and a Ford Fusion. Plain ol' functional transports.

My father’s first nice fun car was a ‘57 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner. It was my grandfathers and he gave it to my father when he got his ‘65 Mustang. It is still in the family.
