After taking another look, the frame for the receiver is right behind that cover. (Shown by arrows in pic). It looks like if you have the tow package, that threaded hole won’t be there for the tow hook. Anyone without tow package not have the hole?

I know there are 2 aftermarket tow hitches. The curt slides in the bottom of bumper; the other brand you actually remove a piece under the bumper because of how high up it sits. I'd imagine that's the one that blocks that hole.....?‍♂ poor design I guess. I installed the curt on mine and the hole is still accessible

Looking at one with vs w/o and its depth in general, it looks to me as if it's not blocked but just missing.

I don't have a tow package. Mine does come with the threaded hole.
Is that really for a tow hook? I haven't seen any trucks with one tow hook on the side before.

•RECOVERY• hook / loop. It's intended for extracting a vehicle that spun out into the median, or similar exited-the-roadway situations by a tow/recovery truck. Wouldn't use it for anything else.

I watched a video of the new Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, it has just one rear recovery hook.

As @VirtualJMills posted above, it would be for a light pull or extraction. I definitely would not tug or pull hard on it.

I wonder what pull strength those threads are rated at. As a Jeep guy that's used tow points a LOT I can't get my head around the idea. Granted I'm used to winching over and off of large rocks and occasional mud hole. I'm guessing most are not doing hard core off-roading but even snatching or winching if buried in sand is going to be a lot of tension. Be careful out there!

Edit
I guess I missed the above comments about intended "light" use.

Here is what I found. I asked my dealer and they are looking into it. https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/ford-services/parts-and-service/ford-bronco-sport-off-road-hardware/

Sounds like there IS supposed to be a pin of some sort.
Whomever wrote this copy wasn't party to decisions made later in build, apparently. :)

Should you need to be recovered from the rear, a rear recovery point is mounted directly to the frame of the vehicle. It provides a reliable location to connect tow straps, kinetic ropes or other aids.

  • To find them, use a suitable tool, such as a flathead screwdriver, then pull from the top edge of the towing eye cover (the towing eye cover has a small lanyard to keep it attached to the bumper)
  • To retrieve the pin, lift up the load floor in the cargo area and locate the pin in the tray next to the spare tire
  • To use it, screw the pin into the recovery point; for optimum strength, make sure you completely thread in the screw

The only thing missing for me is the dang pin that is stated to be in the spare area. I have the eye under the cover… no tow package, so can’t help in that conversation.

will find out once I get the tow package installed at ford next year… if I do.

We have a 99 Explorer Sport (2 door) & it has a tow hook mounted to the frame on the l/s rear.
Here is a pic.

Those were often pre-used (versus re-used) during vehicle transport from factory to final delivery geo (e.g. via ship) as tie-down points.
