My Sport came with Pirellis so now I need to buy new tires so I can get up to Snowbird on powder days. What is a good 3peak tire that is not too noisy, and has a good tread life?

Have you considered the Falken Wildpeak that come optional on the BL? Mine have been fine 7 I thought most comments I’ve seen on here have rated them favorably.

I like the look of the Toyo AT3 sidewall as well as the tread pattern better than the falken tires. I was surprised at how noisy the Toyo weren’t. Not as quiet as the falken 235, I had on the badlands for a few days before swapping the Toyo 245 on

I just put on the Cooper Discoverer road and trail AT tires. so far I am very impressed, quieter than the highway tires the bronco sport came with and good traction. I did lose a bit og milage from what a energy conserving tire gave me but still very good.

I switched out my Pirellis at 17K for Falken AT3Ws. The Pirellis weren't that good in the snow and they had lost a lot of tread by 17K. The Falkens are a little louder and mileage has gone down a little -- but the added traction is worth it in my opinion. I will be looking at the new Falken AT4Ws for my full size Bronco when the time comes.

Cooper Discoverer - road and trail AT tires no noise to complain about. My mileage is still around 28.5 mpg. highway and local driving. BB.

Went with the Coopers myself, as the AT4W added 10 lb/tire over the AT3W and the Coopers only 4lb. That said, being a Vermonter, winter means swapping out to the Hakkapeliitta R% SUV snows.

Your best bet is to get some objective information.

My opinion (and that of others) is worth considering, but there are so many variables that one person might swear by a certain tire and someone else might say they suck. That's common in The Tire Rack ratings for example.

Here are the top 4 SUV winter tires in the CR ratings. They give a lot of data, I adjusted it so that what most people prioritize is visible (slightly cut off):

Has anyone used BF Goodrich Trail Terrain or Michelin Cross Climate 2's? I've seen good deep snow reviews on them but don't know if what I'm looking at are paid reviews.

For unpaid reviews see post #9, above.

Unfortunately, CR did not review the 2 you mentioned. I know the Michelin CC2 is good -- we have them on our old RAV4. They are a bit of a compromise though. They have the 3MPSF rating but do not have the snow & ice performance of a good dedicated winter tire.

As far as compromises go, they are as good as it gets, and fine for moderate winter conditions.

I went with Mickey Thompson Baja Boss tires, mostly from previous experience with the brand. I know they are absolutely BEASTS in silty mud so I don't anticipate much problem with moderate snow. Road noise? Couldn't really tell as I'm usually jamming to Limp Biskut or Rage Against the Machine when I'm "on-road"

Had the Trail Terrains, not a good fit on muddy/rutty trails or deep (+12 inches) of snow, tread is too tight IMHO. I have a set (less than 3k) on stock BB wheels if you or anyone you know is interested

This is probably common knowledge among most forum members, but for those that may not be aware...

In addition to the tread pattern, snow traction is a function of the rubber compound and tire width.

Most tires (except for 3PMSF) have a compound that becomes relatively hard in cold temps. An aggressive off-road tire may be great in dirt and mud, but there's a good chance it will not perform well in ice & snow.

Width is also important. Under most conditions, wider = better performance (within reason). However, for snow-covered pavement, narrow tires perform better, because they are more likely to cut through to the road surface, rather than riding on top of the snow.

For example -- I was driving home from work one night around 11 PM. I-270 had a good 5-6" of snow on it. I was in my little '93 Nissan NX2000 (with about 4-5" of ground clearance) and narrow winter tires. The only other vehicle in sight was a lifted Suburban with what appeared to be huge off-road tires. I was in lane 1, and the Suburban was in lane 4. As I was slowly passing him, he sped up. I didn't want to be behind him so I sped up. We went back and forth like that for about a minute until the Suburban began to fishtail and then did a few 360's before coming to rest backwards, up against the Jersey wall.
