So…..are we just going to keep getting the water pump replaced every year? Where does this end?

I have a 2021 OBX, 33k miles. Purchased 6/2021 with no extended warranty. I had my water pump replaced at 10k and 20k miles. Just had to dump more in the reservoir because it’s low again but I’m no longer covered under warranty. Dealer quoted me $1,800 to replace and said that I just may have to do this every 10k miles because “they’re all like this”. I drive 10k a year, so this would be an annual cost for me. (I also have had RDU, shocks and various other suspension components fail early). I’m also in many BS forums and pages and seems this is an overwhelmingly common issue amongst owners.

Wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on this? Is it just ok to accept that the water pump (….and RDU and shocks) is a consumable item now? I get that under warranty it’s just a minor inconvenience, but this will add up after a while when self paying. Does anyone have any insight or advice I may be overlooking here? I’m having a hard time accepting that it’s just ok for ford to equip a vehicle with known failures and expect everyone to stay quiet about it.

Yes I looked into extended warranties.

I have had to have my water pump replaced about every 12k miles. I am on my 4th water pump and the cooling system has been flushed during the past 2 replacements.
I do have a Ford 75k mile extended warranty, once that comes to an end I will be looking to getting a different vehicle.
I sure don't want to be on the hook for a yearly water pump.

Good morning. I can take a closer look at your water pump concerns and repairs on my end. To get started, can you please send over a message with your VIN and the name/location of the Ford dealer you have been working with?

yeah just had my water pump done and now the RDU issue. I have ext warranty till '27 but it's just the annoyance of bringing it to the shop all the time. I only have 35,000 kms on mine and just don't feel great about keeping it after ext warranty is finished.

We just had our 21 OBX in to investigate the RDU issue @ 56k miles (I also have commented regarding the RDU on another thread), and they replaced the water pump after finding a leak which was causing friction (their words) due to low coolant, and stated the RDU issue at low speeds was one cylinder dropping out, and interestingly enough if you are in any mode other than eco or normal that "shudder" won't happen.

Ford engineers should be collecting these bad pumps and doing forensics on them to determine what's causing all the failures (design flaw, poor seals, casting grit, etc). There are just way too many failures for such a basic item. I've had a number of vehicles with over 300k on them on the original pumps. Cheers!

I have 55k on a 21 BB and no issues. It's strange how it seems certain BS are plagued and others seem to be better off. I will be watching my 21 and my 24 very closely. It's a shame that Ford designed such a cool vehicle and yet forgone some basic quality assurances in production.

It's easy for me to say dump it as that might not be feasible for you.

Unfortunately, new vehicles are a crap shoot on their reliability. Over the last 6+ years I've owned 4 different vehicles.

Even though I didn't know how long I would keep them, I've bought a FACTORY extended warranty on all of them. Even when I sold one, I either received a full or prorated refund on the extended warranty.

Are they worth the money, only when you need to use it. But I'm comfortable paying out ahead of the game assuming that I will need it.

That said, replacing a water pump every 10K miles is horsesh!t. Ford should step up and remedy this situation.

Dealer quoted $1800 to replace water pump?
I bought a spare in case I got stranded. About $40. Dealer replaced mine under warranty recently. Took tech about 2.5 hrs to do the job. Maybe because practice makes perfect? But something doesn't add up. Even if dealer was charging $120 hr for tech.

I stopped by a dealership recently and while there, asked about programming the stick on keypad. They said it would be their standard hourly rate which is about $180/hr.

Yes $1,800 was my quote. I’m female, so I’m hoping that’s not why I would be expected to pay a premium

I’d at least get a quote from a few more dealerships or even a local mechanic, if Ford won’t give you a break.

Maybe someone can chime in but I wonder if you can just keep filling it with coolant until it can be replaced?
