While I do believe these batteries were at the end of their life and the BCM/PCM calibration would not have prevented them from dying. In reading the description of the recall and with the software update I was expecting that the driver would get a notification if the battery was degraded. I do understand that a battery could test normal one day and be bad the next day so maybe the software update to provide the notification is worthless. I would have hoped OP would at least have gotten a notification of a degraded battery before it died. That is what concerns me.
From recall description:
The BCM and PCM calibrations are unable to detect a sudden change in the 12-volt battery State of Charge (SOC) during a drive cycle.
The update BCM calibrations will provide improved detection of 12V battery SOC during drive cycles, inhibit auto stop/start in the event of a low SOC, and provide notification to the driver if the battery is degraded. The updated PCM calibrations will increase the alternator output threshold to maintain vehicle operation if a low 12V battery SOC is detected during a drive cycle.
