Pardon me for a dumb question, but both of my 2023 Fords require the same Sync 23188 and current map updates. Can I use one download set (Sync file and map license & file) for both or do I have to download one set of files for one and again for the second.

Also, the website told me the days of three map updates is long gone. I got one update.

Maybe for sync 23188 but if you have 2 different 2023 models (or any set of different Ford models) there can be model specific files for any Sync version. Since both of your vehicles are Sync 3.4 and both use NAV Maps that eliminates one source of differences.

Best to download both to your PC using their VINs and then you could compare windows folders to see if they are identical. If identical you need only create one USB Device to use in both vehicles.

NAV Maps is VIN specific so for this update you need to create two USB Device downloads, one for each vehicle.

I think Ford website will give you two different license files for the VINs. I would do them separately on different USBs.

Thank you. Yes, the files are somewhat different. So while I wasn't thrilled that I had to download 13GB twice (12GB+ for the maps and almost 1GB for Sync23188) it was the safer bet.

Now the next issue is that while I was downloading files for the the USB solution both vehicles updated over Wi-Fi to 23188!

But Ford isn't showing that the update completed. So I guess I'll still run the USB update so I can generate the .xml file.

Again, thank you both for the replies.

If you check for updates from the head unit, it will inform Ford that you are up to date.

Will give it another shot. I have checked for updates at the head unit several times. Each time it tells me I'm up-to-date at the vehicle. But online it still shows as needing the update. Maybe just a time cycle thing.

Thanks!

Sometimes during a sync update the USB device is pulled too soon and the file is not written to the device.

On at least one of my prior sync updates done via USB, the file was written to the USB but could not be uploaded to the Ford website and no amount of time nor scanning for updates in the vehicle ever solved the disconnect between what version the website thought i had and what the vehicle actually had. Ford stated this was a known issue and to ignore the disconnect.

On my 23188 update via USB, the file was uploaded and there were no issues with that sort of disconnect which happened on prior sync version upgrades.

The Ford website never updated via the WiFi route, so I ran the update via the USB route on both vehicles. Generated and uploaded the .xml file. .xml files accepted, all good. Thank you, everyone in this thread for the help.

P.S. One vehicle updated the map to NA 2 23 via WiFi. The other I'm gonna try via USB. I've used my one complimentary Nav update. You folks who had three were definitely lucky!

2023

Great instructions in Post 1, btw.

And I do now see what you mean about the number of years one gets. The one download is for this year's. So I guess we'll see next year if the complimentary downloads is three. Or one. Or something else.

Great thread; I found it HUGELY helpful.

Wanted to add that I did the map update on one vehicle following Ford's instruction to have the engine running. What a waste of gas.

So for the second vehicle map update, I tried to do it w/o starting the engine. I turned the key to "accessory" and installed w/o ever starting the engine until the very end when the cycling requirement kicked in. No issues, saved gas. I did have it hooked to a battery tender the entire time which I think helped get it through the entire process. I only got a "turn off or start engine to save battery" message at the very end when almost simultaneously the screen gave me the "upgrade finished, remove USB, cycle off then start up" message.

I think this would even work with those vehicles that have the button push rather than key (which is what the first vehicle had).

This "non start" method seems to be doable and thus, the way to go. The very opposite of a "non-starter"!

More Map update drama. The BScurrently has map NA 2 22. It started updating to NA 2 23 in early July over wifi. Still not updated and stopped downloading files. Now shows all software up to date when checking for updates but map is still NA 2 22. 19 Edge updated over wifi in a week so realized something different with BS going on. Brought the BS into the dealer to update Sync which already had the latest version 23188 and update the map. I think what they did was reset Sync but they couldn't update the map because they could not find an update in the system where they see sync updates. I showed them the website where it says I have an update. I really need an emoji showing hand slapping head or hair on fire, LOL.

I next contacted the Ford SyncNav team for assistance. Explained everything that happened. Updating over wifi than trying to have dealer do the update and the first thing they tell me is that the map update should not be coming over wifi even though that is what the BS and my other Ford vehicles have been doing. We get past that and move onto what to do next. The rep tells me the dealer did not try to do the update correctly. The rep said the dealer can not see the update in the same system that shows Sync updates. She said that the dealer actually has to go to the same website that the customer goes to and download the files to a USB to install the map update just like the customer would do. Does this sound like how the dealer gets the update for the customers car?

The Nav team rep then tries to walk me through downloading the files on my MAC but the map file will not download, only the license file downloads. The CSR consults with the research team who then tells the rep even though the maps should not be updating over wifi that I should let the wifi download finish so the rep has me do a soft reset of Sync and check for updates. That didn't work so the rep is elevating the issue and gave me a case number which would take 10 to 12 days to get back to me.

In the mean time I decided to spend the $40 and order the preloaded USB map update. Hopefully that will work.

Interesting you note that.

As I've written in several posts above I just updated my two Fords. The second vehicle DID download the map update over WiFi and install, but something seemed off (not fully or correctly installed, which is why I went the USB route).

The Bronco Sport tried several times to download the map update over WiFi and was never successful. So again, went the USB route.

I'm going the USB route for both from here on out. So no surprise that I will say you made the correct call to get the USB.

Good luck!

P.S. Should I find it amusing (or what?) that the Ford doesn't appear to know it's own product?

Thank you, I have been doing wifi updates for the free maps since my 20 Escape without problem. The BS is the first one that I had issues with. Interestingly the service writer at the dealer told me he has seen problems with the wifi updates on the newer vehicles across models so something changed. When I mentioned to the Nav team rep that the owners manual still mentions updates through wifi that just went over her head and basically just kept repeating I am not supposed to be able to update over wifi.
