They were definitely updated through the wifi. I only updated the maps once on my Edge using the preloaded USB when it was new otherwise I never downloaded or purchased the USB. The updates would happen in the background over time.It is impossible for the navigation map updates to update using WiFi. The files are too large. You must download map updates and use a USB flash drive to update. You can also order a pre installed version on a USB drive from Ford.
For 3 years after purchase of the vehicle, you will receive opportunities to download and update the maps. After that you will have to pay for the update.
You have the opportunity to receive 1 and only 1 update each calendar year.
Sync 3.4 can be updated through a connection to WiFi but never navigation maps. Ford has issued map component updates through Wi-Fi. I remember a map voice update that happened before thorough Wi-Fi.
Travel is part of SiriusXM and requires a subscription.
Found this on Page 395 of the 24 Bronco Sport Owners Manual
"Annual navigation map updates are available for purchase through your dealership. Depending on your purchase agreement, you might be eligible for a free map update. You can choose to download the map data update onto a USB, order a USB, or use Wi-Fi to deliver automatic updates. To update your map data over Wi-Fi, your vehicle must be connected to a Wi-Fi access point. Map data files are large, so it is highly recommended to perform the update when free Wi-Fi is available otherwise high data rates may apply. For USB updates, free map update eligibility, and other details, contact dealers at 1-866-462-8837 in the United States and Canada or 800-557-5539 in Mexico or visit our local website for more information."
Still trying to figure out how long I am eligible for free updates.
