It's not much of a risk if there's a good return policy. I will test stuff from Amazon for this very reason.
Depends on what you are buying and what the "risk" is of said item failing. Return policy doesn't make something risk free if when that item breaks/fails it causes other items/people/things to be damaged.

There was a guy on eBay selling Rhino Rack kits for a song. They are damaged boxes, but the racks are mint and have been absolutely fantastic. Not a sound when driving and built like a tank. I'll see if I can find the listing for you.

Well said.

That was my concern when I was looking at bars 4 years ago. We actually use our roof rack to occasionally carry heavy construction materials, etc., but even if we didn't there's always the possibility of a poorly made bar coming loose.

Unlike most purchases, lack of quality with the cross bars can have serious consequences.

That said, I imagine there are more options now than there were in 2022, and some may be just as good as, if not better than, the OE bars.

Those look like they could be good, but there are very few reviews. Also, it's not clear how they mount.

I noticed there is a huge difference in capacity between the off-road bars (265 lbs.) and the on-road bars (~110 lbs. IIRC).

The bars are trim specific.

I believe the ford specs say:

Max 150 lbs dynamic, without a moonroof, and 600 lbs static.
Max 100 lbs dynamic, with a moonroof, and 400 lbs static.

These numbers include the weight of the crossbars, so I don’t think the crossbars are going to be the limiting factor.

This is my understanding, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Sounds good to me, I was just repeating what the Amazon listing says. Probably vendor hype.

Aside from the strength of the bars, rails, and roof, another consideration is the effect a lot of weight on the roof has on handling.

I have these from Amazon, and they are rock solid. I carry firewood, gear, etc. etc. and they do their job. They work with my sunroof also.

I'm not sure if those are the same one's I have, but I had to replace the bolt to get them to work. The ones they came with were too short. The fit of the, feet?, to the rails is a little uneven and there are a couple small gaps. Seems sturdy though, but I haven't used them for much, and I don't really plan on it. A cheap basket (eventually I'll get a box as they are quieter, more weather resistant, lockable, etc) with light but more bukly items like tent, sleeping bags, foam pads, and maybe a few 1lb propane tanks.

Correct. But at that point, once you install them, I would expect that you could evaluate the sturdiness yourself. The units I got are solid.

I got these, which were recommended in this thread, as an early Father’s Day gift. $69.99 on Amazon. I am very pleased. The fit and finish is very nice. Here is the link. Price has went down a few dollars. https://a.co/d/04w27GAy

Just wondering if those bars that you have, could they be installed further forward on the factory rails like where that solid part is near the front? Just wondering if they would still clamp in that area?

What I have read is all Sports side rails are solid at the very front. Mine are almost as far forward as they can go. I might could go another inch forward. They will not work on the solid part. Full size Broncos have a hole where mine is solid, but I cannot speak to whether they would fit there or not.

Okay thanks, pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I really wish they would clamp forward just before it starts to taper down. Those nice low profile bars would make a nice mounting point for some lights LOL

I don't think so, looking at your picture, my badlands has a hole in the rail where yours doesn't. I'm pretty sure they are different. I will grab a picture when I can.
