Does anyone prefer the Bronco Sport over the regular Bronco? (Or vice versa)

A couple days ago I test drove a 2023 4-door hardtop Bronco with automatic transmission. I had previously test driven a 2-door hard top with manual transmission, which was a fun drive, but small. I currently own a 2023 Big Bend Bronco Sport which I find is an almost ideal size as a daily driver.

I liked the full-size 4-door Bronco. Took it on the highway. Drove nicely. Base engine is more than enough power. Marine grade vinyl seats, drain plugs in the floor... super easy to hose out and clean when needed. Solid truck! Tons of space. Really like the removable hardtop. Audio system was decent as well. Great cabin. I liked pretty much everything about it.

The other side is I feel the Bronco Sport seats are a bit more comfortable. For me, I would say the full size Bronco is overkill as a daily driver, but it would also probably motivate me more to get outdoors more often to explore and camp / overland. I live in Northern Ontario (Canada) and there is a lot of access to nature. WIth the amount of snow we typically encounter in winter, the full-size Bronco is attractive. However, I probably wouldn't be tackling difficult terrain on a regular basis. And for the rest of the time, the full-size Bronco would be overkill as a daily driver, including the cost of ownership. Not to mention, the current economy and Ford's high financing rates of 8% in my market, I just couldn't justify spending $22,000 in interest to finance the purchase. If I was able to purchase outright in cash, that would be different.

If money were no object I'd own one of each. Or just eat the cost of purchase of the full-size and keep it on the road as a daily driver. But I'm too practical to spend that much on interest. If the market cools next year, perhaps I'd reconsider.

I have to say though, the test drive really made me appreciate what I have in the Sport... it’s more practical as a daily driver. I really enjoy it. Better fuel economy, easier to park. I’ve outfitted it pretty well. It's all-wheel drive is capable. The Sport is a lot less money.

Pics of my Sport with the winter wheels on, and the Bronco I test drove.

Love the look of the 2-door Bronco. Just right for me. But…. It’s more than I need and more than I want to spend on a vehicle.

When buying my Sport Heritage trim, I had a list of parameters for what I needed in a vehicle. Features, cost, AWD (at the least) was a must. Those parameters yielded a fairly short list that fit my needs. The little 3-banger concerned me, but I picked my BS up in late August and it’s really grown on me. 3k miles so far and so far, so good. TBH, I have some mild dislikes but the pluses outweigh the minuses.

I think the driving factor for choosing the Bronco Sport over the Bronco is cost. If they were priced the same what would you choose?
For me the biggest let down with the Sport is the towing capacity, if it had another 1000-1500 lbs capacity it would be an ideal vehicle, also the interior materials could be better.

Great place! I’m sure you will be checking out Sand Hollow State Park. Lots of good ORV trails there.
Oh boy don't take a Sport out to Sand Hollow!!! I live here and Matt's Off road towing makes a fortune there lol. Big Bronco yes, Sport no.

They’re taking the full size. The Sport is still back in Houston.

It’s amazing to see all the rental cars Matt rescues. Who knew an all wheel drive Charger could get even as far as they do!

Interesting idea I had: Maverick wheelbase for a three row Bronco Sport. 2.0 available in all trim levels. Longer wheelbase and larger engine should bring the towing capacity similar to Maverick's 4,000#.

I love my "little" baby bronco, but I can barely get it in the garage. I'd have to leave a 'big' bronco in the driveway which would necessitate moving cars all the time. When it snows, I wonder how many people will bother to clean the roof of that larger, higher car? Or what will happen if that snow on the roof turns into ice? A friend literally lost an eye because of ice from a vehicle in front of her flying off and smashing her windshield.

I also don't off road more than the occasional farm, or unpaved road. So the capability of the larger vehicle would be lost on me.

I also agree that the bigger bronco seems odd looking to me. As Cursed Bronco mentioned, it could be the proportions. Seeing one on the roads around... they just seem a bit much for a daily driver.
Failing to clean the snow from the roof gets the driver a nice fine here in NH.

? Love it!

I drove Escapes for 40 hours / week, 48 weeks / year, from 2013 to 2022 at work. Escapes are reliable, comfortable, adequate power, and maintained good traction during heavy rain and ankle deep snow.

I like the Escape but I like the Escape in an Otterbox better.
I couldn't pass up on this photo opportunity today at our local grocery store.

For me the driving factor is height. My wife is 5'1". With full size Bronco, she would require a step ladder to get in and a parachute to get out.

My wife is an inch shorter and has a Wildtrak Bronco with factory running boards. She doesn't have any problems, or at least not enough for her to give up her Bronco.

My Bronco has slider steps that are up a couple of inches higher than her running boards and she still climbs in.

Where there's a will, there's a way. :)

Now for her 96 Bronco, we kept a step on string for her mom.

Here’s a good video of the Chicagoland Bronco Group including Jake with his Sport. He made it through almost everything!

They’re a great group of people, especially behind the camera and putting together those videos. They make riding in Badlands Park in Indiana very enjoyable. And as you can see from the video, the rock climbing is better in the Bronco and mostly due to clearance. This and the ability to take the top off have me considering changing from the Sport.
