I have a American Ford Bronco Sport - Badlands edition. I recently imported it into Canada. How can I get the daytime running lights to come on when the car is started and the headlight knob is in the off position? They wont pass it for the RIV federal inspection with the headlights in the auto position where the running lights are on. They indicate that the running lights have to come on when the car is started and the headlight knob is in the off position.

I tried to take it to a Ford dealer who said it cant be reprogrammed.

Help, please!

I will say I don't know anything about this law in Canada, but I don't think the BS can be started with the lights in the off position. It always defaults to Auto, which means the DRL are always on when you start the car. The switch is electronic, not a dial that can be left in a certain position.

Thats what I tried to explain now to two different inspection spots. However, they say that the running lights have to be on when you turn the knob to the off position. It's idiotic because its always in the auto position.

when a person wants to import/export a vehicle from one country to another, that person has the responsibility to first check that the vehicle meets requirements

in your case that was not done ahead of time

Now you are faced with options on how to deal with the situation

Perhaps go to a Ford dealership in the country where you want to bring the vehicle (Canada) and consult with them what options you have

Dude, I understand that it is my responsibility. I was looking for some help on how to get the vehicle to comply. I took it to a Ford dealer who said they cant program it. What's the point of the forum, if it's not to seek help and support each other?

I would think that's something that could be accomplished with Forscan (but I'm not positive about it). Even if it is, I know that a dealer wouldn't go anywhere near that. Maybe one of the other forum members could look at the available BCM settings in Forscan and confirm one way or another.

Another thing to consider is that it may be a headlight/DRL assembly difference in how they're internally wired. Again, just spitballing, but those are the only two options that would seem to apply.

Sorry I couldn't provide a more definitive answer.

Look in to installing Raptor style lights in the grill wired to come on at start up.
I believe these can be used as DRL in Canada.
Something to check in to.

Maybe you've done this, but I would go to a local Ford dealership and see what a Canadian Bronco Sport does at start-up.

If the BS starts with lights in Auto, then the inspectors are wrong. If the BS starts up with DRL on and lights set to off, then the inspectors are correct. Hopefully, the service dept should then be able to help you track down the wiring/parts/etc.....

(Edit. I see you also posted over at Bronco6G. Would have responded there, as well, but the thread was justifiably locked.)

I would hard wire them to a circuit that is always hot when the key is on. I would think that will get you going without programing etc. You can always makeup a harness with the headlight plugs and change it back after inspection.

Ok my 2 cents are spent

Sounds to me like those inspectors simply do not want to approve your vehicle for more personal reasons that legit legal reasons.

Hardwiring would be a great idea if it weren't for the fact that the headlamps and DRLs are controlled by LIN via the BCM. I suspect that the LED control module or BCM can be programmed but will require either a trip to the dealer or Forscan. Or FDRS if you happen to know someone who has that.

no personal issues at all, the requirement is that if the switch is in the off position the drl must be active, the only way we can turn them off is to be in park and put the e-brake on. and yes you can switch the switch to "off" and start the car. auto is a setting on the switch not a default unless you leave the switch int he auto position.

as per a different thread we think there are different light housings in the US as not all the led accent lighting lights up with different models as it does in Canada, so if there is no way to change it with forscan then the OP might have to change lights to make it legal in Canada.

we have all kinds of issue with US cars up here, DRL is a big one, the speedometer has to be changed to KPH instead of MPH which was a good send with the electronic Speedos that can be either. when I brought my Harley in from the US I had to do the speedometer (back then we could just put a sticker overlay on it) and I had to order different rear signal light mounts as in Canada they have a larger distance they must be away from the brake light than in the us, than god its just a different length stalk though, was fairly cheep.

I did some playing around yesterday while waiting in line at Starbucks, so unlike my truck when I put the car in park the daytime running lights do shut off, in the day time anyways(that is a huge improvement) and the only other time they shut off is when I move the light switch to "on" . if you are in anything but park they will be on in every light switch setting except manual headlights on.

Does Canada still allow the fog lights to be used as DRL? If so, could those be hard wired? Or an add on set of lights be added and wired to the ignition?
