Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on new tires. My current situation is a bit frustrating. I recently found out that I need to replace my tires sooner than expected because because I failed to read either my tire warranty or my Discount Tire Certificate about the requirement to come in before the tread got to 2/32".[/QUOTE
There, I fixed it for you.

Good that you found a replacement in the form of the Falken Wildpeak AT4w, it's a great tire. Of course they are very heavy, so heavy that many people shy away from them. But I am sure you read that already and are moving forward properly informed.

I've been buying tires from Discount for 45 years. Once, they put the wrong size tires on after a 3 hour wait. I had only purchased 2 tires. I wrote to the main office and told them how unhappy I was. They told me to go back and they put 4 new tires on for no additional cost.

You bought the certificate from Discount, not Cooper, so I would think they'd make it good. Obviously, your mileage was way too low, even though you were past the tread depth. It doesn't cost anything to send an email to corporate.

I know the certificates are way more expensive than they used to be, and not quite as good. My tires always last more than 3 years. I'm in a position to self insure for the smaller things, so I've quit buying the certificates.
I haven't had to buy tires in a while. Are you saying the certificates are expensive now? Maybe not even worth it?

As for OP... so if you went in at 4/32" and told them the tread depth is low, would they have replaced them? Do you have to get it in right at 3/32" because at 2/32" you're on your own?

Maybe something's changed but I've never had that issue. But I usually have to replace tires due to road hazard well before tread depth or age.

Discount Tire road hazard is pretty simple and is shown in Post #13 (took it from DTs website). The road hazard has changed but I don’t know when it was changed.

Cost was $38.98 per tire for FALKEN WILDPEAK A/T4W 235/65R17 June 2024.

I went with the nitto nomads they have a 60k warranty great on road traction and rated 3 mountains for ice and snow.

The problem with being this old is that I remember when everything was cheaper. I can remember when expensive tires for my truck cost $50 each. The hazard warranty was priced accordingly. I'm in a position in my old age to afford to buy a tire if one (or four) goes bad.

I just got the tires today and I honestly don’t feel a difference for being 10 pounds heavier per tire and there is a little more road noise. As far as not reading the Discount certificates, that’s mostly true but it’s still a pretty scummy thing to not honor the certificate past 3/32”. I now know how to fully take advantage of the certificates!

I am baffled at the low mileage lifespan that some owners are reporting. My OB was equipped with Michelin Primacy A/S from the factory. I rotated the tires every 5,000 miles. The OEM tires lasted 60,000 miles.

I replaced the OEM tires with the same Michelin Primacy A/S and rotated them every 5,000 miles. I just replaced these tires at 120,000 with the same tires.
My rear toe was out of alignment from the factory- that would definitely contribute to tread wear issues. I rotate every 5,000 miles and can definitely tell the difference between the front and rear tires when I rotate. Although I'm getting even wear on the tire itself (they all stand up straight when I have them off the vehicle), the ones on the front get a LOT more wear than the ones on the rear each cycle. I have "Hankook Dynapro AT2 Extreme" tires, which have been amazing on and off road with a 60,000 mile warranty. I'm 19,000 miles into the install period... not sure I'm going to have the tread wear left to make it to 60K, but it'll probably be fairly close. Got another 800 miles till my next rotation, so I'll take a look and see what my remaining tread is.

My tire still has 2/32” tread left but has worn very quickly, to me it makes no sense.
I wasn't asking why Discount Tire sets a 3/32" limit, I was asking why you felt "screwed" by them. That detail was in the paperwork and at the link you posted, correct?

I feel you need a tire education class.
Honestly I don't get it either.

So let's say I buy 60k mile tires. I rotate them regularly. Alignment's good.

I go in and I'm told I'm at 5/32" at 25k miles. I express concern, they say it's cool, tires get firmer as they wear and won't wear as fast for the rest of the mileage. I go back at 30k for the next rotation and I'm at 2/32". I'm told tough cookies, even though it's out of warranty 30k miles early.

Is this something where they'd say take it up with the tire manufacturer instead of the certificate?

The certificate does not cover wear. It covers road hazards which are not repairable, such as a side wall puncture.

The manufacturer of the tire offers the prorated mileage warranty.
