Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on new tires. My current situation is a bit frustrating. I recently found out that I need to replace my tires sooner than expected because Discount Tire didn’t inform me about the requirement to come in before the tread got to 2/32". I had Cooper CS5 Grand Touring tires, which had an 80,000-mile warranty, but they only lasted a little over 30,000 miles. Definitely not what I was expecting.

Given my experience, I’m now on the hunt for new all-terrain tires. I drive mostly on the road but want something that can handle occasional off-road situations. My main priorities are longevity and durability, especially since I want to avoid another early replacement. Does anyone have recommendations for all-terrain tires that perform well on the road and have a solid lifespan? I’d appreciate any insights or personal experiences you’ve had.

I have had Firestone destination LE2/3 on on 5 of my vehicles 2w F150s, 4w Escapes, and my current 4w Ranger. They have done well on pavement and the occasional snow we get in TN. I have gotten better than 60,000 miles out of them, I change them out in the fall before snow can fall so could have gone longer but safety first. I will not hesitate to get more of them. They don't look all big bad 4x4but they have never left me stuck.

I am baffled at the low mileage lifespan that some owners are reporting. My OB was equipped with Michelin Primacy A/S from the factory. I rotated the tires every 5,000 miles. The OEM tires lasted 60,000 miles.

I replaced the OEM tires with the same Michelin Primacy A/S and rotated them every 5,000 miles. I just replaced these tires at 120,000 with the same tires.

Your Cooper tires were not OEM. How many miles did you get on your OEM tires?

How many miles do you have on the Cooper tires?

How often do you rotate and balance your tires?

I had the Falken AT3W’s and they only lasted 27,000 miles and I have my tires rotated and balanced every oil change (usually 5500-7500 miles) both sets were worn evenly. I just ordered some Falken AT4W’s in 235 60 R17 because they have pretty good reviews

Can you clarify here? What would have happened if you had taken your car in before the tread wore below 2/32"?

If it’s wearing quickly and it’s above 3/32” they could have gotten Cooper Tire to replace it with a fee or if you bought the tire certificate they would replace it for free… my thinking was it had to be all the way worn down to be able to do that

You really have to study todays tire warranties and the tire certificate - these are not as good as the old days

and getting the tires rotated every 5K or so at most places comes with the remaining wear level and a color coded scale like green is good and yellow better think about replacing because at red are shot

What do you mean by "bought the tire certificate?"

You have to read the certificate
It’s ok, good lesson and next time you’ll know
Next time I will be taking full advantage of the certificate and will be checking tread depth every oil change

In some instances the certificate is secondary to the tire manufacturer warranty so read any tire certificate carefully no matter where you buy it from

it may or may not be as good as you think

And whoever was rotating your tires really let you down .. to me that’s who failed you

It’s your responsibility to read the tire manufacturers warranty carefully and to read the Discount Tire tire certificate carefully. It was whoever you used to rotate tires that failed to keep you informed of your tread depth

and Discount Tire at any location rotates your tires for free

but it’s ok, costly now but you are better prepared for the future. It’s not the failure itself it’s what is learn from the failure that can be taken forward.

This is info from Discount Tire, if they were rotating and rebalancing your tires (which is free), there is no way they would not have told you the tires were wearing down - they are in the business of selling tires and would have informed you of the tire manufacture warranty before it was time to replace the tires.

Most likely the tire manufacturer warranty would have been prorated (if you were beyond 3 years from tire purchase at stated in Discount Tire certificate) depending on how many miles you were at, haw much time had elapsed since purchase, if you were the original purchaser of the tires, etc. so not sure how much you would have received if you had filed a claim with the tire manufacturer.

Here is the info online at Discount Tire for the tire certificate: @Discount Tire

HOW DO CERTIFICATES WORK?

If your tire fails due to a non-repairable road hazard or manufacturer defect,
Has more than 3/32" of tread depth and
Is within 3 years of purchase date

We'll refund the full purchase price with applicable sales tax. You then have the option to purchase a replacement at the refund price (plus applicable sales tax).

There's no prorating, mileage adjustment or disqualification for any reason, including run-on damage. It's the very best tire protection coverage we know of.

Here is a link to their website, it’s pretty good if it’s above 3/32” tread life and unfortunately they didn’t tell me that part when I bought the tires https://www.discounttire.com/certificates
The "certificate" appears to be an additional tire warranty, but I can't tell from your posts whether you bought the certificates for your tires. Assuming you bought them, didn't they come with paperwork? Based on the link you posted about certificates it appears Discount Tire is very up front about what it does/does not cover and the exclusions. If you didn't buy the certificate then you would be bound by the manufacturer's warranty, which ALSO comes with paperwork.

I've read quite a few warranty documents; there's generally a lot of words in them. I can't see how the lack of a verbal warning regarding a portion of the warranty is tantamount to getting screwed over.

I've been buying tires from Discount for 45 years. Once, they put the wrong size tires on after a 3 hour wait. I had only purchased 2 tires. I wrote to the main office and told them how unhappy I was. They told me to go back and they put 4 new tires on for no additional cost.

You bought the certificate from Discount, not Cooper, so I would think they'd make it good. Obviously, your mileage was way too low, even though you were past the tread depth. It doesn't cost anything to send an email to corporate.

I know the certificates are way more expensive than they used to be, and not quite as good. My tires always last more than 3 years. I'm in a position to self insure for the smaller things, so I've quit buying the certificates.
