Yet somehow Farley still runs the company and earns over $26M per.

Either this is an extremely biased report, or the person who wrote it has no idea what is happening with Toyots. or GM.FWIW, Toyota has to replace almost all it's truck engines sold over the past couple years, and their build quality is trash since moving their assembly to Mexico. And GM has issued multiple stop sales on their trucks

The article was more about Ford's value as an investment than about vehicle quality. There's no question that many manufacturers are having quality issues currently, but Ford has issued more recalls than others. Toyota has so far avoided getting sucked in to the EV frenzy, while Ford has invested billions toward EV development. I think it's safe to say Ford's foray into the EV market has been nothing short of disastrous, and that's had far more impact on its bottom line than its quality problems.

I wouldn't say they've issued more recalls, would say they have issued a lot of recalls that are engine/model specific but not across all engine/models. Like the BS for example, the 2.0 has had the 1 recall for battery update, the 1.5 is on what 12 recalls so far? On the EV matter absolutely agree. The entire EV market is a fad being mandated by government that once you try it you never want it again. Particularly if you live in an area that drops below freezing. I honestly feel the hybrid truck trend will also go the wayside once people realize what you lose in the long run and the costs of repair and batteries. As for other manufactures, I was at one point a huge Toyota guy, Toyota has not been Toyota in my opinion since 2020. Their build quality has collapsed, and their tech is just now starting to catch up to everyone else and to call it buggy and cumbersome would be an understatement.

I find it odd they are claiming recalls but half of what they claim to be recalls are merely software updates, they also have this as a foot note, I think with our previous agreement on the EV issue and with all the tech now in every vehicle they are going to have to distinguish between software updates and mechanical recalls

I disagree that EVs are a fad and once you try it you never want it again.

Yes there are a few who try an EV and they don’t make sense but for the vast majority EVs are great. But you need to be able to charge at home for it to make sense. When asked how long does it take to charge my answer is 2 seconds. I just plug it in at home and it has a full tank every morning. For road trips the Tesla SuperCharge network is great.

I ā€triedā€ my first EV 10 years ago with a 80 mile range Nissan Leaf as a local commuter car. We currently own 2 Tesla Model Ys and a Ford Lightning. Iā€˜LL NEVER GO BACK TO ICE unless I need to tow heavy. For that we own a Ford F+450 which is only used to tow our 5th wheel.

As far as cold country and EVs go, look at Norway. Over 80% of new cars sold in Norway last year are electric. Yes range is reduced 20% in the cold.

It’s become too political. I have 2 friends who wear their red hats proudly EXCEPT when they are driving their EVs. ??

Dont knock it until you try it.

Here's a good read about the overall Ford situation:
https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2024/07/ford-fix-or-repair-daily-or-foolishly-obeying-ridiculous-directives.php

It summarizes a Barron's article:
https://www.barrons.com/articles/ford-earnings-stock-price-70e0e48e

TL;DR:
1. Warranty claims are taking a really big chunk out of profits.

2. Ford retail sales for 2QFY24 earned $1.3 billion.

3. However, the EV side of things LOST $1.1 billion (just about wiping out the retail sales profit).

4. Ford commercial sales made roughly $2.5 - 2.6 billion (this is where Ford made the vast majority of its $2.8 billion quarterly profits). This quarterly profit is down over 25% from 2QFY23. Ford's worst performance since 2008. (A good reason why Ford stock price went down over 15% the other day.)

5. Ford lost $50k per EV. But Farley says that's good news b/c it's down from $100k per vehicle!

Both links are worth the read.

Very good and balanced points! I agree too.

As an EE I’ve been experimenting with home made electric propulsion power for decades. I attempted to build my first solar powered motor driven model car when I was 12.
Disappointing experience when I learned my solar cells put out 0.5V but no problem I saved enough money from paper routes and cutting grass to buy enough for the 3V motor. Then I had to teach myself about current and resistance. The motor required too much current and the solar cells at that time put out a minuscule amount of current. Was never going to afford the number of cells needed and would take up too much area for my model car. But i learned basic electrical circuits so not a waste of time.

EVs or a more efficient alternate will come. The reason I like EVs is it will push electrical grid infrastructure enhancements. Most likely future homes will have local power generation on-site or at least to neighborhoods to distribute power. Upgrading the grid requires a ā€œpushā€, while updating is needed regardless of EVs, EVs can act as the justification. Infrastructure upgrades creates good paying jobs and enhances skill sets. All needed as well for the future.

That's a very bad idea.

I was (and still am) concerned about FordPass. From a thread I started:

"By using FordPass you give Ford permission to Hoover up a LOT of data. Data that could be used against you by law enforcement; your MVA/DMV; your insurance company; and/or Ford.

https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/fordpass/manage-my-fordpass-account/fordpass-terms-and-conditions/

"Information We Collect:"

"Vehicle Location: Non-precise or precise location/GPS information, including current vehicle location, travel direction, speed, charging locations used (if applicable), and information about the environment where the vehicle is operated (such as weather, road segment data, trail and road surface conditions and geometry, traffic signs, and other surroundings, may be collected from the vehicle in connection with location-based functions of FordPass. Vehicle Location may also be derived from IP address.
Driving Data (may also be referred to as Driving Characteristics and Behavior): Information about how the vehicle is operated and used (such as speed, use of accelerator, brakes, steering, seat belts, etc.)."

"Audio/Visual (may also be referred to as Connected Voice Data, Digital Assistant, or Ford Assistant): Voice commands and other utterances captured when the vehicle’s voice recognition system is in ā€œactive listenā€ state."

"...name, email address, photo, street address, telephone number, credit card, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and vehicle service records."
~
That's bad enough, a bunch of drivers ratting each other out is even worse.

Now that I'm retired and no longer commuting 75-100 miles r/t 5 days a week, none of the above has any impact on me personally, but that doesn't make it any less concerning.

One related point -- one of the factors FordPass and insurance company monitors keep track of is G-forces. Of course depending upon the vehicle and road conditions what is safe/reasonable can vary tremendously. There's a big difference between a Mustang on dry pavement and an Expedition on ice & snow. Same with speed -- some roads are ridiculously under posted (just as some should be posted lower). There's a huge difference between running 20-30 mph over on a deserted desert highway and going 20-30 over through a crowded downtown area. In short, there's a lot to be said for officer discretion.
