  • 8 GB or larger for sync, but I would get at least 32 GB. If you have NAV, an update recently came out for that too, and IIRC the instructions for that wanted at least 16GB.
  • For key cycle I turned engine off, opened the door, closed it, then started vehicle. again. I didn't do a master reset but think it's in the system menu in the vehicle.
  • I did mine while driving, but it didn't take very long at all, 10 minutes maybe. The Nav update took 45 minutes for me. I did my Nav update first (while driving), then came home and reformatted my USB drive, transferred the Sync update, then did the Sync update. I don't think it matters which you do first.
  • I used a regular USB (not USB-C) but did get a new one because mine were all old and of 8GB or less, and I also wanted one with faster transfer speeds. Not sure at what point the higher speeds help much for the vehicle update, but it does help transferring files to and from the drive.
I’ll need to pick up a USB drive. I have a 4 GB and a 128 MB.

As a follow-up to your earlier question about the master reset. I didn't do that, and I am having no issues, but will reset if I do. I know others that sound like they have had more experience with this than me recommended it.

Anyway, you asked how to perform the reset:
https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/search/sync.master.reset

Before performing a SYNC 3 master reset, try a system reset to restore functionality. The system reset does not delete any data you have stored.

Performing a System Reset

  1. Press and hold the Seek up and the audio unit Power buttons simultaneously until the screen goes black.
  2. Wait for the system reset to complete.
  3. Press the audio unit Power button to switch the system on.
If the system reset does not resolve the issue, continue with a master reset.

Performing a Master Reset

On your vehicle's SYNC screen:

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Choose General.
  3. Scroll down and press Master Reset. A message confirming that all system settings will be erased and reset to factory defaults will appear.
  4. Press Continue. A "Resetting to factory defaults" message will appear, the system will turn off, and the screen will go blank. It may take a few minutes for the system to reset and resume normal operation.

Does it say "indexing" or does it say "updating software" on the top of the screen?
Did you format the USB flash drive to exFAT before copying the 3 items over?

It sounds like the unit cannot read the update. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.

Went right over 22251 with no master reset. Updated on screen setting to 23188. Also installed a map update a few days ago and that shows 2.22.

Yea I have a drive I use all the time for our BS's, I was asking the other user because it shouldn't be indexing. It should just recognize and start installing.

Did you extract the 3 items?

Also, was the USB flash drive erased before you copied the 3 items over?

No, no, no. I already installed all the updates. The user I was responding to and quoted stated that his was indexing after he plugged it in, and asked how long the program has to run before it's completed. I was asking that user about their install. I'm not talking or asking for myself.

I downloaded to the USB no sweat. When I insert the USB the computer recognizes it. Then it indexes it. How long does the program have to run to complete the download?

OK Here's what I did last night. I downloaded NUST-14G381-AD from the computer. I got 2 different brands of USB. They were both 32gb and formatted exFAT. I downloaded the file on both the USBs. When I tried to download into my vehicle they both reacted the same. The vehicle first "detected" the USB. Then it "indexed" the USB. Then it "completed indexing" the USB. I pulled the USB out at this point to get any feedback from forum members.

Did you unzip the file and place the three folders on the drive? Your drive should have these three folders on it. Not the zipped folder NUST-14G381-AD.

I'm thinking you didn't unzip it or didn't place the autoinstall.lst on the drive. The drive shouldn't index, the autoinstall program should start the installation immediately.

Are there not any patch notes? How do we know what's changed or been fixed?
I've been looking for those to no avail. All I've found is a list of changes from the last sync with no context or details: without those it's pretty much gibberish:

Change list - No details

Anyone find anything helpful? It would be nice to know if it's worth the bother. Besides, I've been bitten before with installing undocumented "fixes." Ford, like all other big businees', aren't always altruistic in their practices.

When I put the USB on my computer, it tells me it has file NUST-14G381-AD. It says it is compressed (zipped). When I open this file I have 3 parts to it. SyncMyRide, autoinstall.lst, and DONTINDX.MSA. Does this me they are not unzipped? If so , how do I unzip them?

Open the file on your desktop, then drag ONLY THE THREE SyncMyRide, autoinstall.lst, and DONTINDX.MSA files onto the drive. Those should be the only three files, and they SHOULD NOT be in another folder.
