First I like to say that I have been a big fan of K&N CAI kits for my other cars, But they missed the mark with their CAI kit for the Bronco Sport 1.5. No improvement in performance or mileage after installment and the worst was the grinding noise that was present every time you stepped on the gas. K&N has agreed to a refund and I have already returned the CAI but now working on month 2 to receive the refund and little reply to my concerns. They claim to stand by there product with a life time guarantee but I am not so convinced

Sorry to hear about this. K&N has indeed been around for a long time. I’m surprised it’s quibbling about a refund.

"Grinding noise" is quite strange to be emanating from the air intake. An increased "whooshing" or "sucking" noise? Yes. Grinding? Very strange. Would have loved to hear it to make a better judgement call. I'm not sure if your K&N model is open element or closed element, but if its open element, its basically like putting a microphone on the engine. The engine sound, in particular the turbo, are going to be amplified with an open element CAI. Is it possible the "grinding" noise was just the normal sound of a 3cylinder GDI, but merely louder?

All that being said, if you have already shipped your product back, and they have received it, then they are stealing your money. I would be calling and lighting people up left and right. This is one of the reasons that pretty much everything I buy on 'disposable income' is purchased with my amex. ONe phone call to them about a transaction like this, and they cancel the transaction and refund me my money....right there, on the spot.

I purchased an K&N filter for my Jeep Liberty Diesel. Then I read more about it and it said not to use it in dusty environments, which means all of NM. I never installed it.

My son-in-law had someting similar on his F-150, and anytime you hit a hill, or hit the gas, the noise was loud enough you had to shout to talk to each other. My daughter made him go back to stock.

If it's an open element, its not a cold air intake either. Even with the so called rubber seal that is supposed to adhere to the hood when closed, it does not, therefore you are drawing in warm air from the engine compartment. And if the seal was working, then how would the filter be sucking any air at all? It would be like a vacuum.

Ford (and most other OEM air filter boxes) have it right. The filter is in a box, with a tube that draws air from the front grill or fender side. I'd leave off the so called CAI's that are out there. Nice eye candy perhaps when the hood is opened, but you're tossing good money away that could be used for a functional item.

Rarely will you notice a power or mpg gain with just a CAI mod. However; open up the intake and exhaust together and you will maximize the potential the CAI is designed for. Do either mod without combining them is just for show. I realized a noticeable gain in mpg by using an A-Fe CAI and removing the OEM muffler and adding a Cat-Back exhaust system. Power increased as well but without putting my BS on a Dyno I cannot say how much. My mpg easily increased by 10%, even more if I drive in the sweet spot between 45 and 55 mph.

I would like to see a dyno sheet that shows any increases over using the stock OEM air box, then the added aftermarket CAI to verify the gains.

Agreed.

I actually experienced this on my Mustang firsthand. When I installed my Ford Performance tune, it came with the open element "CAI" (or whatever you want to call it, I just call it by its referred name). But anyway, I'm an avid datalogger, and everytime I came to a stop or a red light, I would see my intake temps climb as high as 150! Problem solved when I added my Airaid "CAI" which, even though it had a cone style tip, was still enclosed in a box (and see thru one, at that!).
