Anyone have any tips for changing oil on the 1.5 with the composite oil pan? Stupid thing ejects oil like a fire hose.

There's this: FORD EASY OIL DRAIN (roninfactory.com) or I've seen where the removal of the plastic plug (only partially loosened) was done very carefully and allowed to slowly drain. I'll probably just use a bucket the next oil change. Cheers!

I am not due for my second oil change for several months, but my next try I plan to insert a marine oil drain pump made for boat engines. I have this one. If it is successful sucking up most of the old oil through the dipstick tube like it does my inboard/outboard V8 in the boat, the small amount of remaining oil shouldn't flow like a fire hose when I unscrew the Bronco drain plug.

Here's the manual pump version. Still not cheap but if you've already got something like this, I think it should work (?) If you don't have a marine oil pump, the Ronin plug looks like a great option, though still not cheap.

I have used a similar one from Harbor Freight for years. Down through the dipstick to the base of the pan and pump it out. It is slower than pulling the plug but considering I don't have to run anything up ramps or put on stands, there's no belly pans to remove and I don't have to clean up spills? Winning. Toughest thing is getting a sample to send to Blackstone Labs but I have a smaller transfer pump now for that. (take a sample some time and send it to Blackstone on your vehicles. It's worth the $50.)

Once per year I still do a proper drain from the plug just to make sure there's nothing else in there.

Winning.

Definite benefits. Unfortunately, with the Badlands the skid (bash) plate must still be removed to replace the oil filter. If that weren't the case a pump would be tempting.

None of the Fumoto valves will work for 1.5L Sports with the composite oil pan since the Fumoto's are 14mm threaded. Cheers!
Thanks for the info. I hadn't checked that since the BS BL has the 2.0L.

I only change the oil once a year, and I use a large 15 quart pan, so spills aren't an issue. The worst part is replacing the oil filter.

<Later> I just checked out of curiosity and Fumoto lists 5 different valves for a 2022 BS 1.5L:
https://www.fumotousa.com/cars-pickups-ford-2022-bronco-sport-1-5l-l3

I know you said 'composite oil pan'. Since we don't have the 1.5L I haven't paid close attention to the different oil pans and when they were used. I imagine the valves they list are for the steel pan. At least some BS owners have Fumoto as an option.

Yep. Poor design IMO. If I didn't know any better I'd think Ford put it there to make sure the QuickLube lane is subsidized. Shame there's no space to put in a relocation kit to a more convenient spot.

At this point I'm just used to high pressure canister filters on BMWs and MBs and spin ons from Subaru being right up front and easy to access. My old Toyota trucks would require removal of a fender liner to get to the filter but I could do it with all 4 wheels on the ground.

Yes, they are. I like the Fumoto valves and I've used them on all my previous vehicles. They're a little slow (especially with the 12 quarts coming out of the 7.3L Diesel crankcase), but I generally just go do something else for a bit. Cheers!

I have a set of lightweight composite plastic ramps. The Sport goes up the ramps with no drama - no problem. This makes it easy (but still time consuming with 13 fasteners) to remove the belly pan. My 1.5 has the metal oil pan - the oil drain tends to shoot the oil (like a firehose) backwards toward the rear of the car. I place my drain pan so that one edge is directly under the drain plug (to catch drips) and the rest of it goes toward the rear of the car to catch the stream. Don't usually make a mess, but sometimes I have missed the target when the oil first comes out.
Our Outback is super easy - oil filter on top of engine pointing upwards - I can just reach under car to remove oil plug without removing anything else.

Not sure if the person that posted this relocation completed the work

Definitely going to pick one of these up before my next oil change. Thanks!

Just did an oil change at 7,551 miles on my 1.5L Badlands. It had been about 5,100 miles since the initial oil change. Pretty easy and painless. Had bought a pair of polymer ramps (which conveniently came with rubber anti skit matts and wheel chocks), drain pan, Pennzoil PZ-21 filter and 2x 5 quart w5x20. I had installed a Rival alum skidplate earlier. Only took about 6-8 minutes to take it off (10 bolts!). Yellow drain plug came out easily...I heeded earler warnings and carefully pulled it out to slow the flow of oil, so there was no splash, no mess. Installed a Ronin oil plug, replaced the old filter (needed channel locks to pull it out) and filled it up. about 50 minutes, including reinstalling the Rival skid plate. Probably could cut it down to 40 minutes next time.
