My brother has a ~2018 F-150 that ended up with swollen lug nuts. Because of his ordeal in getting his wheels off (two shops -- one failed and the other refused to even try), I knew exactly what this thread title meant.

Prior to his experience, I had never heard of such a thing. It's amazing how engineers are constantly finding new ways to screw up stuff that has worked fine for 100 years. On the one hand, we get cool stuff like navigation systems. On the other hand, they literally figured out a way to completely bungle a lug nut.

Outrageous that they're still using these 2-piece lug nuts.

These are on my list for a swap in the next several months.

This has popped up again for me. I've been thinking of I should check the torque on my lug nuts and maybe even switch to a one piece.

I like the looks of the OEM ones. Some of the aftermarket look too long. And I'm not a fan of the black (y'all do you, that doesn't bother me).

The link I posted had both stock length and longer.

I'll be rotating the tires on my Escape next week. Will swap OE lugs for the ones I have from Tirerack. I've cleaned them, but they have some light rust. May buy new ones. They're longer than OE. More surface to grab with an impact wrench.

I'll remove the OE ones by hand. They don't get an impact wrench.

Will swap out the ones on my wife's BS BL at the first tire rotation, too. I'll buy OE-length replacement black lugs, if I don't like the look.

Is Ford still using the two piece lug nuts with the cap that swells? From the looks of them on my 2023 BS BB I would guess yes. If so I will be replacing them very quickly. Thanks for any feedback and a good quality lug nut replacement.
Sorry guys, I have no experience with this issue, but good luck! ?

There is a socket one can buy that will bite into the lug nut and def takes it off. They call it a turbo socket and it is specifically designed for wheel nuts. I got one for my F150 in case any of the nuts refused to come off as I replaced them with Gorilla nuts. I didn't have to use the turbo socket so I can't tell you, my experience.

Ford should be embarrassed for building vehicles with that garbage.

Not just Ford. Other manufacturers also use two-piece lug nuts. Totota and Nissan owners have the problem. Discussed on their forums.

Removed the Ford lugs yesterday when I did the first tire rotation on my Escape. Put on the slightly longer one-piece lug nuts I had from Tirerack. Removed the OE lugs by hand, and they'll go back on when I trade it in.

Can now use an impact wrench when I rotate the tires next year.

I was in the waiting room while the dealer was trying to figure out my SYNC issue in June. Service advisor came out and went over a list of items with a woman sitting next to me. One was to replace all lug nuts. She approved it. Really wanted to say not to approve that service.

Those are the exact set I had delivered today. Found them on Amazon. I probably will install them tomorrow. I think the black nuts are an improvement in the looks dept. too.
I’m thinking choosing your nuts based on color could be considered discriminatory.

They call it a turbo socket ...
Caliper bracket bolts were corroded and rounded with a regular socket when I did the rear brakes on my '14 Escope in January at 98,454 miles.

DEWALT MAX IMPACT Extractor Set (5-Piece) DWABEXTRACT5 - The Home Depot

Worked GREAT! Highly recommended purchase if you're doing brakes on a high-mileage vehicle.

My review is in the comments. Another review also mentions them working great for corroded brake bolts.

Noticed on the service CD that caliper bracket bolts are one-time use. I'll be replacing them for now on.

What a scam. Replace the old junk with new junk to unsuspecting customers. Especially women I bet.
