This was after my wife rescued my friends and I from the airport. She threw it into off road to back it out of the driveway. The highways were rough and the local roads were rougher. Had to drop one friend off 3 blocks from his house as the roads were completely untouched and we didn't want to risk getting stuck at midnight. The Sport handled way better than I could have expected.

I had the same issue when my wife & I lived up in NJ with a 2000 Ranger & a 1999 Explorer Sport when driven in the snow that had smooth inner fender liners. Nothing new. We had to kick the frozen snow off the inner fender liners.
No. It's new and totally different. With the smooth liners, you kick the snow/ice chunks and it falls off pretty easily. The kids today would say it's "so satisfying." With these fuzzy pieces of junk, it sticks and sticks and sticks. About the only way to remove it is to spray it with warm water or wait until the temps climb and it melts and falls off. It's like pulling old bubble gum out of carpet! :)

I’ve done -40. No need or desire to repeat. ;)
I grew up in Wisconsin as a youngster. Moved back home to PR for decades. Been back in the US for over 20 years. This is the coldest in FL. 25 today in central state. Coño (damn it) it cold...?

Here in Brockville we’ve had pretty consistent winter weather with snow on the ground and chilly temperatures since before Christmas. This morning was no different with a bit of snowfall overnight and snow on the main as well as side streets. The snow crunches whether walking or driving on it.

It’s a nice Canadian winter day here.

I have a lot of respect for those who live in the great white north, but that kind of weather is a hard no for me. Probably the same for northerners when they look at our summer temps.

I’m not bothered by winter. That said the one thing I’m wary of and detest is freezing rain. Thats why during winter I prefer cooler temperatures. When it’s reasonably under 0 Celsius (32F) you don’t get freezing rain. But if it’s hovering around 0 then freezing rain is a possibility. With freezing rain I don’t go out unless I absolutely have to.

That and the roads get slushy and driving is just a good ole game of “will I survive my drive?”

^^ It was quite cold last night so the overnight snowfall of maybe 2in. was dry powder. And the city did a good job of having the streets clear by the time most of the town woke up and started going out. As you can see in the pics I posted the snow was dry and packed rather than wet and greasy so it was quite good to drive on.

Not here.

We got about 7" of powder 2 weeks ago. It hasn't gone away. High temps have been in the teens, but for some reason the snow developed a strong 1-1/2" icy crust. We have to stomp on it to get it to break, and we're still walking on ice. The snow blower can't break through it.

In 41 years here I've never seen anything like it.

A few days ago we were able to get the Badlands out, but the lane is about 1/10 mile long with section that is a 20% grade. The BL has the OE tires so even with the center and rear locked it took a few attempts before we made it to the top.

I've always had winter tires for all of our vehicles, but now that we're retired and can wait for the roads to be cleared I just stuck with the stock all-season tires. I'm sure the BL would have walked right out with good winter tires.

BTW -- it's going down to 7* tonight, with a wind chill of -9*. That's pretty brisk for Maryland, which is technically in the 'South.'

I always have winter tires for this time of year because it’s not so much the precipitation, but the colder temperatures that affect all-season tires. The compounds winter tires are made of make them more pliable in cold temperatures than all-seasons.

Absolutely.

I'm a winter tire evangelist. I began using them before most people knew they existed. For decades I had 4 winter tires mounted and balanced for all of our vehicles.

These days, we're both retired and there is no reason for us to drive on snow/ice covered roads. The county typically has our little tar & chip road cleared within hours after the snow stops falling. Same with our lane -- I usually have it cleared within 12-24 hours. The crust on this snow is the worst I've seen in 41 years -- it's the first time the snow blower (a decent 2-stage machine) could not get through it.

While winter tire rubber is designed to remain flexible at lower temps, every winter tire review I've seen -- from Car & Driver to Consumer Reports to respected independent reviewers -- shows that all tires remain a compromise. Winter tires are clearly better than all-season and all-weather tires on ice and snow, but they are invariably *worse* when it comes to:

* Wet & dry braking
* Handling
* Anti-hydroplaning

So while it is impractical for most people, it's best not to use winter tires unless there is ice & snow on the roads, because they are less safe (with the possible exception of extremely cold temps). I used to take the winter tires off my WRX if there was no freezing precip in the forecast because I didn't like the way they handled -- and they were Michelin 'high performance' winter tires. Of course, winters here are typically mild, and lately we've gone entire winters without any real snow.

I usually have my winter wheels/tires mounted in late Nov or early Dec. Come mid to late March the summer wheels/tires are swapped back on.

Winter.
