Should I Go With Factory/OEM Windshield Replacement or Aftermarket?

The others are said to be made in China, and the quality is said to be sub-par.
Then if the windshields happens to have built in antenna's and such, it's been said they don't work very well, if at all.

For anyone, when getting insurance, make sure you get a policy which covers your windshield. The damage can happen anywhere and anyplace, be it on paved roads, or offroad.

As for the Bronco Sports having any worst than other vehicle windshields, remember, the Jeeps have pretty much flat windshields, so they're probably the very worst. With their new models, they've gone w/Gorilla Glass, which is supposed to be pretty good, but not perfect, I'm sure.

Finally, does your present insurance company know about the crack you already have? If not, then make a claim through them stating that it just happened. ?

Definitely go with OEM glass. On a different car I have issues with my intermittent wipers not working correctly and it all due to the previous owner getting aftermarket glass installed. The sensors don't sit exactly right and it's causing a problem

I would go with OEM installation. If the windshield is not installed correctly it will throw off the camera for lane keeping where it cannot be calibrated. Check the operation of your lane keeping system immediately before having it replaced them immediately after to ensure it didn't get misplaced.

I’ve gotten two new windshields (first replacement unbelievably got hit by a rock less than 24 hours after installation) and both were OEM. I have complete glass coverage with no deductible, so I was glad to get OEM. I probably would have paid the difference if insurance only covered aftermarket; I just wouldn’t want to be wondering if it was going to be a problem.

My state South Carolina law dictates that insurance companies must waive the deductible for auto glass repair and replacement when it's covered under comprehensive coverage.
I wonder if I went OEM glass, I would just pay the cost difference of the cheaper glass. Back in NJ, I paid an extra insurance cost with a low or $0 deductible on glass.

I went to a local glass shop, and they ordered Ford replacement. It had all the Ford info on it so I assume it was Ford Same part number. It cost me 720 dollars to have it done. I had to pay 20.00 down to the shop in Phoenix and had it replaced in Pinetop-Lakeside. Took about an hour. I didn't have glass insurance either, but I do now.

If you're going through insurance, do you know for sure it won't impact your rates? My mom had her's replaced when she was with Geico. When she switched to Progressive, they said she had a claim or 2. The only claims she had were with the windshield (couldn't remember how many but they all matched up). Progressive was still cheaper than Geico.

Hello all,

I have a 2022 Bronco Sport Base model. Sustained a cracked windshield in January of this year from a rock on the highway and since I didn’t realize at the time how bad of a problem this is with these cars, did not have $0 glass coverage. Added it immediately after with my insurer, Progressive. Have been praying for another rock to hit the windshield since that time so I could use the insurance but it hasn’t happened yet and I’m getting tired of looking at the crack.

So now, I’m looking to replace the windshield. I recently took the vehicle into the Ford dealership to get several recalls taken care of and they gave me a couple different quotes for replacement. One is the factory glass which costs $1054 (plus tax) and an aftermarket windshield which would be $908.50 (plus tax). When this incident originally happened, I got quotes from a couple other places around me including Safelite and they were all over $1,000.

Is there really any difference between getting the factory glass instead of the aftermarket? I asked the guy at the dealer and he said “probably not a huge difference but with all the safety systems on the car and price not much difference would recommend the factory glass and then we have to recalibrate the car.”

Do any of you have any advice on how I should proceed here? Should I go with factory glass or aftermarket? Seems like guy at the dealer could be trying to upsell me on using the factory glass but I know nothing about this so I’m not sure. Is he B.S.ing me with the "recalibration" comment? Wouldn't they recalibrate the glass and sensors regardless of which glass I chose?? My insurance deductible is $750, so it doesn’t really make sense to go that route and risk my rates going up either. Would save me probably $500 but of course I would probably pay that over the course of a year anyway in increased premiums.

Would really appreciate any advice you guys could provide!

I feel like you answered your own question. Since this is 100% out of pocket, go with cheapest option. Next one is covered 100% insurance so go with what you can afford. My 21 BSBL got replaced 6 months ago it just cracked stopped at a light. Nothing hit it. Seamless replacement with Safelite $1056 but 100% covered by insurance. Just ensure if you have tech like lane assist and collision assist they drive the car at 45 mph to recalibrate.

Farmer's tools me that my rates wouldn't go up if I replaced a windshield. I haven't tried it yet.
