Sadly, it's all about money.

Look what's happened to You Tube. Never used to have the advertisements, now they pop up all the time unless you pay a fee to go add less.
Pretty much everything is about money, right? I'm assuming you don't work for free?

Nope, didn't work for free.

But I do volunteer work for free now.

This is about adding unneeded costs to the consumer and possible safety issues.

Could also be a ploy to prevent other manuf. from doing so...just sayin'.
Yea, patents are filed for a lot of reasons including keeping new ideas proprietary

This one just seems so unnecessary for boo koo reasons. Crazier stuff will be coming down the pike in the future.

I supppose most are to young to remember when cable tv was first introduced, you paid so you didn’t get commercials. Now you just pay way more and still get commercials.

It usually starts as a benefit and ends with costing you more money and less benefits.

Been a cable customer since 1983. We subscribed for a better picture and HBO. There were still ads with cable even back then. The ads on HBO were for their own programming. Ads on other channels were standard ads (toys, fast food, alcohol, tobacco, etc.)

Now we are seeing the streaming services, which used to be ad-free, introduce ads. Streaming is essentially the "new" cable, and it can actually be more expensive than cable if people are not judicious with their subscriptions.

Honestly, I couldn't care less if an occasional ad pops up on the vehicle infotainment screen. I hardly ever look at that screen while driving (unless the navigation is running.) Having it pop up in the gauge cluster, however, should never be permitted. The gauge cluster is intended to show pertinent vehicle operational data. This is one time I would have no problem with the federal government passing a vehicle regulation prohibiting the display of advertising in the gauge cluster of a vehicle while in any gear other than park.

Ultimately, I doubt we will ever see this implemented. It seems to be more of a case of Ford wanting to be the "owner" of this idea so that they can either license it or sell it at a later date to any other company that actually thinks they want to do this.

I would invent and patent such a technology/concept with the goal of charging any other brand to use it, which will likely be the case in the future.

I would then ban the use of such technology in my own vehicles and use it as a selling point over the competition.

They had already moved to commercials by then. When cable started in the 70’s, it was commercial free as that was main value. I will agree, the picture was better or less fuzzy.

Here is my synopsis with Alexa:

Me : ask question
Alexa: answer … then Alexa tries to say, would you like …
Me: I interrupt and tell Alexa to keep her bullshit advertising in her box
Alexa: tells me I’m not using nice language

I am dreaming of a day when I can set a personality for my personal assistant. I'm thinking Samuel Jackson.

ME (trying to figure out how to ask the question): Hey Sam, what's the...uh...how do I...
SAM (in his angriest, most annoyed tone): ENGLISH M----ERF---ER, DO YOU SPEAK IT?

oh, this advertising thing will likely happen, and when it does, they'll probably crank the volume up several decibels over what you're already listening to, like they do with television ads. And that will drive me nuts.

I'd probably pay extra for a television that would compensate for the increased volume of TV commercials, to keep them at the same level as the program i'm watching. SO sick of having to juggle the remote nearly every time commercials comes on. Rant over. thx.

Instead of a TV that modulates the volume of commercials you can simply purchase programming that doesn't have commercials. For the cost of a typical package from your local cable provider you can purchase several premium streaming services that offer a great deal of programming with no commercials whatsoever.

Playing devil's advocate, I can see the argument that conventional over the air commercial radio includes commercials, and so it wouldn't be any more of a distraction than that medium is currently.
On the other hand, this proposal couched as a patent sucks!
My car is a transportation conveyance, not an entertainment center. Even though I have RIP'ed my whole CD collection and have it on my cell phone, I listen to the radio, whether driving locally or on a road trip.
Locally, I want to hear the local news and political gossip, and weather and traffic reports.
On long road trips, I find that tuning the radio on a long drive, after the nearest radio station is out of range, keeps me alert. I use the search button on the steering wheel, or the tuning knob, neither of which requires me to look at a stupid touch screen to make a selection.
In years past, I used to play cassette tapes or CDs on long trips, and recognized that it had a tendency to lull me off to la-la land. With a fresh, unfamiliar voice on the radio, and unfamiliar DJ's, I had more a tendency to listen and pay attention to the world around me.
