Currently, my new to me 21 Big Bend is in the shop with this code. It has 47k miles on it. The code also showed up the week I bought it. Why is it Ford deems this repair not covered by the power train warranty? This is 3 issues in a month for me. Bad Cat, bad water pump. Luckily those two were covered under warranty. Beginning to wonder if the previous owner got rid of it due to these issues and Echo Park covered it up.

For those who have not looked up this code:

What causes OBD-II fault code P3402?
In an effort to meet fuel and emissions standards, many manufacturers are utilizing cylinder deactivation systems. This system allows the engine's control module (PCM) to disable select cylinders when additional power is not needed from the engine, such as at idle or when cruising on the highway. If the engine's control module (PCM) determines that the Intake Valve for cylinder number one is not Turning on or off the way it is being commanded, the PCM will set code P3402.

Cylinder deactivation on 3 and 4 cylinder engines?

Hmmm.

I've never noticed or felt this on our 2023 Outer Banks model equipped with the 1.5.

If it shuts down a cylinder, then it does it smoothly and without any performance issues to me.

i never noticed it in our 21 big bend but always had it in sport mode which disbales the feature

Well, we are expecting wintery conditions tonight and Wednesday morning in Gainesville Florida; sleet and icy roads. I can't imagine what the loonies will do driving in it that have no experience. As Pink Floyd sang, gotta keep the loonies on the path.

Gee, maybe if I'm stupid enough to go out and drive in the sleet and maybe snow, I can play with the G.O.A.T modes for the first time in my BS.

On the other hand, I'll most likely stay in the house and drink coffee or a beer.

You always drive at highway speeds in “sport mode”? Freeways?

Why?
The throttle response was too laggy in normal, car didn't feel like it moved out of its own way unless it was in sport. Throttle response in eco is like slow motion. Never use eco even in the badlands.

Ok, so after talking to my service advisor this morning, the reason it's not covered under the Powertrain warranty is because it is a non-lubricated engine part. Echo Park's warranty is covering some of the cost, but their labor rate paid is lower than the local dealer's. So I have to make up that difference. $340 to fix it.
If it wasn't warranted, I'd be out $580 before I made my first payment. Not great, not terrible.

When I was driving it on Friday when this popped up, I was interstate driving it was feeling like I was trying to push against the wind, if that makes sense. Got to where I was going and then the CEL on. Seemed to drive fine on the interstate after that. Then the start/stop decided it wanted to have a mind of it's own back in the city.

What is the part that is getting replaced?
