Of course you are free to do whatever you want. I will only warn that a spacer will reduce the width of tire that can be used without rubbing. A lift does not change whether or not a particular tire size will rub on the BS. A 265/65/17 tire is wider but also bigger in diameter. I have a smaller diameter and narrower tire than what you plan to put on and I have rubbing with a spacer.

That is all I will say.

Lufelham: No need to be sorry Hombre, I think Meanderthal (and I to a much lesser extent) were just trying to save you some money and pain.

Hope everything worked out with the OR.

Sincerely,

RR

Lufelham: For clarity, that is very similar to what I wanted to do. I have the spacers I'm putting on today; however, Meanderthal (who has a similar setup), ran into some complications with rubbing with almost that same setup. I'm not expert (I drive a mouse for a living), so if you think it will work, roll with it, but you may want to re-read his posts, before pulling the trigger.

The 70 series tire is going to rub worse than mine (which isn't much and I think that now that the liner has worn through is not rubbing to the point that I can hear it anyway). I know it doesn't seem like much of a difference but every 1/16" makes a difference here.

245/65/17 is what I think you want, and that tire with a 1" spacer will probably give the same rub that I have (very slight). If you drop to a 20mm spacer, that might cure the slight rub.

245/65/17 is the same width & diameter as 245/70/16 or 245/60/18.

Tire Rub

While installing my lift kit, I decided to pull the spring off the strut and look at how the tire approached the unibody. I think there is some interesting findings here.

With the steering at full lock and the suspension compressed (without the spring), you can see that there is little to no gap behind the tire. I’m predicting to contact to the liner.

What this tells me is that trimming the pinch weld will do nothing to prevent rub, at least not a full lock. It also tells me that a lift will help with clearance, a little bit.

Another interesting find is that the stock tires measure at 28-1/2” diameter, which is what the specs say they should be. These Toyo Open Country A/T’s measure at 28-7/8” diameter, which is about 1/2” under what the specs would indicate.

The pinch weld can be a rub point, but it is the upper portion of the weld, not the part at the bottom. As you turn the steering wheel back to center, the tire will move away from the pinch weld.

To give me all the clearance I could get, I trimmed that squeeze out along the pinch weld, which gives maybe 1/16 to 1/8 of more clearance. That allowed me to bias the liner to the back a little to give as much room as possible.
What size of tire is that one?

No matter what trim sport you have , max is 245/65/17 no alteration needed. I have to go in the Meanderthal camp on this one .Total distance = max 30 inch plus liners.
It is on a 16 rim and the walls are 70 .

I believe the shocks are on with no springs. Not a hundred percent on that , but to his point it addresses the max of opening in that area. Not sure haw a Ford engineer claiming that the max size is 31 with no mods . This is stated in car and driver magazine. I am on 235/65/17 now , when I make a change it will be to 245/ 65 /17 .

245/70/16, which are the same outside dimensions as 245/65/17 & 245/60/18

As Jim said, I took the spring off the strut and cycled the suspension up when taking those pictures.
