Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I don't care for the part that puts it in park if the door opens though. Mainly when hooking up a trailer. If I'm a few inches off I just sit in it, put it in reverse, roll the right amount and go back into park. I hate having to get in completely and shut the door to move 2". I see why it does that though so I'm not gonna complain too much. A slight inconvenience for me but if it saves someone's life then it is worth it.

My father-in-law spent a couple of weeks in the hospital recently because he ran over himself. How? Well, he's 84 years old, and he forgot to put the transmission in park before he got out to check how close he was to the curb. The car started moving as soon as he stepped out (it was in reverse), the driver's side door knocked him down, then the left front wheel ran over his foot. His girlfriend (also in her 80s) stopped the car with the emergency brake, but not before his ankle was crushed.

This scenario has played out a number of times over the years, with results ranging from embarrassment to death. And it doesn't just happen to old people. Actor Anton Yelchin died when he was pinned between his car and a gate post at the end of his driveway. Authorities speculate that he got out of his car to check the gate or the mail and neglected to put the transmission in park.

Some may not like this feature, but I do.
Wishing your father-in-law a full and speedy recovery. I'm 80 and my wife is 82. The key word as you get older is 'focus.'

I do it myself.

This feature may be cool to have, but the problem w/electronics and these computerized automatic transmissions, when they fail, they do so w/o warning, and w/them goes the entire transmission.

You’ve been on this forum for almost a year. What the hell have you been doing?! :giggle:
LOLOLOL!!! I drive it maybe once a week. Hell, I'm still figuring out the dial thingy for the transmission. I keep putting it into Park from reverse instead of drive.

I just turn it off, plus I always use auto-hold. If you come to a stop and open the door the car goes into park automatically anyways.

Gosh, sorry to hear about your father in law. Wishing him a speedy recovery. I'm sure that was a really scary experience for all.

I always try to put it in 1st or reverse, then realize, crap, this is an automatic! By then it’s already decided it should go into park to protect myself from myself!

I normally give it a spin counterclockwise. Now, shutting it off has become an issue! The attendant at Costco likes to remind me to shut off the engine while filling. Glad it automatically shuts off after 15 minutes!

I always put mine in park (or at least I think I do). Trying to not build negative habit transfer to other vehicles.

The going into park feature when opening the driver door is slightly annoying, but easily overcome by moving the knob back into the desired drive mode. I'd rather have a slight annoyance when willfully moving the vehicle with my door open than to have an issue down the road like some of the other posters have described.

I put mine in park because I often have things to do before getting out like changing my watch because I work in a stupid place.

Out of habit in driving for almost 50 years, I select park and shut it off.
