Does anybody just go for drives anymore

I know with gas prices it probably doesen't make sense but for me its about peace of mind and enjoying my sport. Sometimes I dont even turn the radio on. The BFG ATs make a nice hum and you "connect" with your vehicle more. I jumped in mine the other day with the tank full and not knowing where I was going, I took off.
I like the back roads and not caring if I get lost. Started out weaving my way through Hershey and ended up in New Jersey. Not in a hurry, traffic thats OK , pull out in front of me well have a nice day ... ended up stopping at hot dog Johnnies. Good dogs ! I think next time I am going north, maybe Canada ?! Dont know, thats a long way on back roads from Harrisburg.

We try to do a couple of road trips every weekend. Usually an hour or so Friday night around Lake Red Rock & then a nice trip on Saturday. We generally put 200 to 300 miles on every weekend.

somrtimes I take "old orange" as well. drove thru Amish country to pick up rototiller in Deleware last time he was out. Fun to drive cause I'm old timey

Road trips have been a central indulgence of retirement. My preferred destinations, largely avoiding interstates, are centered around all of southern Idaho, bits of eastern Oregon, northern Nevada, northern Utah and western Wyoming. Generally well maintained state highways & roads offer too numerous to count off road opportunities. You have to be comfortable with limited cell coverage and planning ahead for gas, victuals, mishaps, etc. But that's exactly what I find so compelling, along with the fact that I was born and raised in SW Idaho and biased about its beauty and population densities outside the main interstate corridors. My 26 BSBL is turning out to be the perfect match for these travels. Fingers crossed.

We do it all the time as well. Generally with the 2 door though and not the Sport. My BSBL generally gets relegated to the utility duty. Which it does quite well.

I retired July, 2020, smack dab in the middle of COVID19 & Wisconsin's state-wide lockdown. Whatever your political persuasion or views about that, the fact was I couldn't DO anything with friends (family are all down south). What I could do was go for a ride. I know Sturgeon Bay WI 4 is hours northeast, so I got a map, drew an arc from SB west to the Mississippi River. Everywhere south of that arc was a day trip. I started driving, just me in my then Ram 1500 pickup. Over the next 6 years I put well over 100,000 miles on 3 vehicles (add in RV camping & 6 long trips to FL, KY, TX, & MO) driving mostly state & county highways (some interstate driving for those multiple state trips). I love it. I look out the bedroom window when I get up and think "Where should I go today?" Now of course I can and do bring friends with and go camping. Being on a back road in all seasons is my bliss. The past year since I got my Bronco Sport was different as I suffered catastrophic water damage from upstairs neighbors, and was displaced for 6 months, the rebuild for which required my attention, but I'm home now & have a camping trip planned for September Up North with friends.

Good to see there are others like me out there. I too am retired and people said I would hate it because of boredom. First of all, I am ok with nothing to do ! Cruising is a great enjoyable time filler. There is all the other stuff such as home needs also (some not so enjoyable). I took a trip to NC with the family years back driving my Moutaineer, truley great vehicle all around, packed with kids, wife and luggage I found the " tail of the dragon " by accident and would like to revisit that with the bronco. In my opinion it handles like a little go kart and without the wife hollering at me to slow down !

Between my Bronco Sport Badlands, Mustang GT, and my C8.
My toughest decision is which one to use for peace of mind on any given day.
GPS always finds me the way home.

My wife & I go for rides especially in the Spring & Fall. We will go out on The Blue Ridge Parkway which is only about 1 hour drive from our house inn SW Va. We like to see all the plants starting to bloom in the Spring & see the tree colors in the Fall. Here is a pic from one of our drives on the BRP where we stopped at one of the overlooks back in 11/2024.
