I have owned my 2023 BS Outer banks since new, and have never experienced the dreaded brake whale moan, so I thought I'd start a poll to see how many here have had this issue.

Edit: Just turned over 6K in miles....still no moaning yet.

I’ve owned a ‘21 ‘22 and now a ‘23 Sport without the whale noise (or any other problem). :fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

So far tied at 50/50

Yeah, I had a 21 without it and have a 22 with it. Started probably a year into ownership. Had the fix (jk lol) that did nothing but seemingly make it worse. Still very early, but a split response kind of leads me to believe it could be tracked down to a bad run of something in the braking system. Either from parts suppliers or at OEM assembly. What do I know, however.

My wife's 2022 Big Bend starting doing it this past winter... Mostly when she would back out of the garage in the morning. Luckily she doesn't leave before everyone else is awake, because it was horrible.

I read the details on the official fix and skipped it as it sounded like a joke.

I just changed all the pads and rotors and it is fine now. Sad to see how much life was left on the old equipment, but they just must have been cheap.

Yes, I have had rear brake noise since new and the dealers (2) both said there is nothing wrong?? Well maybe go to after market brake pads when they wear out??

For reference these are the 3 known TSBs, all 3 are obsolete. Ford has stated a new solution is expected 4Q 2024.

Obsolete: TSB 23-2308

My 22 BB started making "the noise" about a year ago. Over the course of time I've tried various methods of backing up to mitigate, or at least modify the sound. I will say that making the initial gas pedal movement and then releasing the brake pedal while maneuvering backwards sometimes reduces the sound, but not eliminate it. What I find interesting is that even with the foot completely off the brake pedal rolling backwards, the sound still echoes, albeit quieter. Does that indicate the pads are still making contact with the rotors, or is the sound emanating from somewhere else?

Everyone has it. If you don't have it, it just means you don't have it yet. Or you swapped hardware. I think it takes a certain amount of use/wear pattern to get the pad down to a state where the noise happens- and then it takes the right combo of temp and humidity and BRRRooooOOOOOWWWWWoWWW; you got it. Some other combo of pads and rotors should fix it, but Ford doesn't want to cover, so they wait while owners use up brakes and get aftermarket fixes that don't moan. Rear disc brakes last a heckuva long time so it will take years and miles to happen. I'm not changing mine just for some occasional noise until they're used up. Doesn't the car use the brakes as active traction control/ rollover management? Maybe that contributes to the wear pattern?

Yes, the pads still lightly touch the rotors when the wheel turns. It's the light touch, in fact, that instigates the resonance. It's the same physics that causes this:

You can do this experiment yourself if you have a wine glass. Try changing the pressure of your finger to see how it affects the sound.

I've found that backing with increased pressure on the brake pedal eliminates or significantly reduces the sound. This requires the use throttle and brake simultaneously. It takes practice; I wouldn't recommend trying this for the first time in a crowded parking lot.

I'll get a moan or a cow growl or whatever you wanna call it, every now and again. I shrug my shoulders. I almost feel it gives the Ape character at this point. lol

When I took mine to the dealer last week to take care of the Service Bulletin issue, I asked them about the brake problem, and was told a possible 3rd Quarter time frame for a (possible) fix.

My 2021 didn’t have it, but my 2022 had it from basically as soon as I got it. Lately it’s even gotten worse. I tried to have the last TSB repair performed and when the parts arrived, the dealer informed me they were told by Ford not to install them because there was a stop order in place for it.

So now my BS will be out of warranty by the time the next fix comes out and I’ll be stuck with the whale moan … forever? Customer service opened a case but never called me back about what my options will be once I hit 36,000 miles before the next fix comes out.

I've learned to live with it, and I will definitely keep trying to find the best method of minimizing the noise. I'm curious as to the number of Badlands models compared to the rest of the BS line that are experiencing this issue.
