I'm getting ready to order my new BS. Things that are important to me are: leather seats, body color door handles, 360+, tow hitch (just in case - not hauling anything large). I won't be doing any major off roading, but I may occasionally take it on vacations in the blue ridge mountains or want to drive it on the beach, etc... It will primarily be my daily driver, and I do a decent amount of highway driving. I'm debating between the Outer Banks and Badlands, but it would be significantly more expensive to get a Badlands with the leather seats + body color door handles.

My question is... will I miss the larger engine in the Badlands if I go with the Outer Banks? Or will I just appreciate the better gas mileage in the OB? I can't find one near me to test drive and am mainly concerned about the pick up on highways. Any thoughts or comparisons between the two would be helpful!
I would say find a way to test drive it, cuz they are very different I personally could only get the Badlands cuz I don't believe in 3 cylinder engines. God that thing must shake at idle I dread to think of how many motor mounts it would go through. Ok that's probably over exaderated but still there is a noticeable difference in power. And for my badlands if I drive semi aggressive I still get 23.5/ gallon and I can get 27 mpg driving conservatively in eco mode which I think does make a difference. If your not a big off-roader I think the standard AWD should suffice I had a 2014 escape which is basically the same setup as the broncosport as far as I know and it was a champ in mud and snow. I never did anything else, not enough clearance or skid plates for that(I went to NAU in Flagstaff with it for years and never got stuck and I went in some crazy stuff for a CUV). I also wanted leather, mainly for my dog but God it also looks and feels great, the seats are even better than in my titanium escape, the only option on my Badlands was the premium package which was worth it (and the falken atw3s which I swear the sidewall is smaller that any of my other atw3s were, I wonder if Ford had them alter it slightly to better fit city driving, not they they were ever anything but great on pavement). I've never had a heated steering wheel but in Flagstaff in the cold it was awesome. So I would say you sound like you would be ok with an outer banks, but I would really really try to find a way to drive both to make sure cuz I love that 2.0 it's not crazy fast but it feels like it when you realize your in a 4 cylinder CUV. I had 135k miles on my escape and it was still going strong no issues (but turbo wastegate linkage issue but the turbo itself was fine) when a red light runner ruined my baby. I would have bet it would easily have gone over 200k. This 3 cylinder engine I think is new but maybe it's what the fiesta st had so I'd read about that motor and if it had any issues in the long run on cars that have had it for years. And to 13mikeh comparing my 14 escape awd (about the same setup as a non badlands/first edition) to the Badlands and I would say it is definitely more capable off-road for the lift, goat modes (I know I can't believe they make a difference either but they do) two locking diffs center and rear (not really locking diffs they will slip under high load they are just special clutch packs and are actually precursors to the new AWD system Ford will start using in the future as I understand it, that uses 3 electronically controlled clutches, front center and rear, instead of mechanical limited slip differentials to better control grip and driving. The old brake system like on my 2014 escape and non badlands/first edition bronco sports will only do so much and can really heat up the brakes with high usage)(wow that was too long for parentheses but I love em) But if your not off-roading like really going you'll be fine with the outer banks especially if you put some good light duty all terrains on it, and I would not suggest going bigger it will eat I to your mpg and you can't go big enough to really matter unless you do a lift and even then I think it's debatable on these cars. I suggest the falken AT's it's a less aggressive version of the falken atw3s they last forever wear is great and they are spectacular on snow and mud over just about anything else in it's catagory and it's what I ran on my 2014 Ford escape awd titanium (so I'm Definitely not biased) for 60k miles and they were still good when it was totalled. But really I've tried a decent number of tires and I usually go falken unless I want racing or mud tires.

That must have been 30+ years ago with the Quattro of the 1980s. I don't think Audi has made a 5 cylinder in decades.

I've owned two Audis, both with turbocharged 4 cylinders.

Interestingly, the Badlands has better acceleration out of the box than my 2001 Audi A4 (1.8T, stick shift) of the time had, even though the Audi is a "sporty sedan".

Although then I chipped the A4...
It was! :)

My wife loves the 80s Quattro. She currently has an Imola Yellow 2004 TT Quattro 3.2 DSG S-Line roadster. Neat car.

I went with a fully loaded big bend as I felt like it was more value over the OB and badlands and I hate leather seats. I have the tow package(comes with full size spare) ford 360 plus, moonroof, convienace package, all weather floor mats and the optional 18 inch wheels.

Just recently added a skid plate to protect the front bumper and undercarriage.

Only thing I wish they included in the lower trims is a 4x4 lock

The badlands is awesome because you get the AWD goodies but I think other than the Ohio winters my Bronco will mostly be on road. So far I'm digging the baby Bronco. The 1.5L is pretty good to me for a daily in power and fuel mpg. I drive my 2019 mustang gt when I want some speed.

I came from a modified WRX which made around 300hp and 280 lb ft. I am impressed by the engine of the Badlands. For me, body colored door handles aren't important. I wanted a sunroof, nice interior, off-road capability and the looks of a lifted truck in a smaller package than a 4runner. I'm really glad I got the Badlands because when I see other trim levels on the road, they look tiny and awkward to me. The Badlands has better proportions especially with the K02 tires. I probably should have gotten a 4runner but I didn't want to spend another 5-10 grand on lifts, rims, tires, bumpers etc. The Badlands satisfies my itch for having a legit off-roader that makes more than 18mpg and isn't enormous.

I had a Gen1 Lightning for 25 years. Sold it in ‘20 when I reserved my Bronco. The intent was a fun vehicle. Needless to say, my 2 Door is still on order and I’m still waiting. I ordered the Badlands BS as a temporary solution to the allocation and constraints on the full size. According to the specs, the BS BL has more horsepower than the 351w Lightning. Seat of the pants feeling isn’t even close. The Lightning would come out of the hole instantly and press you in the seat. The Badlands, not so much. Point being, it is many factors that determines how the vehicle feels under your seat.

The Lightning had a 4.10 Rear end and 275 tires. It gripped the road and took off. But, basically a brick like shape of the Badlands so top end and gas mileage wasn’t a thing.

You could get a six cylinder or a V8. No reason to measure. How did it go? different strokes for different folks. The 1.5 is fine and will get you from point A to B. Just as the 2.0 will.

Me, too.

Although I also wanted body colored door handles, so ordered with Premium package.

Interesting to see the different view points. I went with Badlands. There were specifics I wanted when deciding between the Outer Banks and Badlands. I did not particularly care about off road capabilities as long as I can get through some mild snow. I came from a 5.0 V8 and thought the 2.0 would be a less noticeable drop. I had several non negotiables in what I wanted.
1. The power moon roof
2. Leather interior in Ebony/Roast
3. 17 inch wheels. I didn’t want 18 or larger. It’s a price and look thing. I’d rather have more tire and less rim
For those looking at this and seeing the 2.0 as being the only Badlands specific feature, you’re partly correct. When trying to order the 2021 Rapid Red Outer Banks, in October of 2021, the Ford computers would not allow the moon roof. I don’t know why, didn’t really care and decided to come back and try later after some of the parts shortages were resolved. Ended up back at my dealer on black Friday, 26 November 2021. I had decided to go ahead and order the Badlands because the computers would allow the moon roof on the premium package. To my surprise the Red was no longer Rapid Red, but Hot Pepper and the model year was now 2022. As I stared at the new color choices, I was deciding between Velocity Blue and Bronze Smoke. The Hot Pepper didn’t call to me like the Rapid Red. As you can see I got Velocity Blue and love it. I’ve seen the Bronze Smoke and the Rapid Red in person and I would have been happy with either. I look forward to seeing the Hot Pepper. If I had a need for a second vehicle, I might have to order the Hot Pepper, but then I’s have to decide between a Badlands and a Heritage. I’m just thankful the didn’t come out with a green I really liked. The Eruption is okay, except for the name ?‍♀, but the Sport needs something a bit brighter. Maybe something in Shamrock?

I am with you on your numbers 2 & 3. I've had power moonroofs for the past couple of decades. I could count on 1 hand the number of times I've driven with it opened up (although, I do often open the cover on rainy days to look up and see the rain falling down).

I definitely did not want larger than 17" wheels. I like larger wheels on the right vehicles. The BS is not the right vehicle. I've got 22" wheels on my X5. They look great. But on something like the BS, it's small circle, more rubber. And the 17 inch wheels are perfect for this SUV.

Audi still have 5cyl engines.... They are in the Sport versions of the "3" family, like RS3 and RSQ3.

I had in the past a Fiat Marea 2.4L 5cyl .... that engine was awesome. (the problem was thar around it:shock:)

My wife doesn't use the moonroof either, so she didnt order it on her Badlands.

Had sunroof, moonroof, whatever since my '87 GTi 16v. Dont use them, and didn't want a $1,600 option on my Escape I won't use.

I, too, like more sidewall now. Older. Also, lots of frost heave potholes in the spring here. Tired of snapped sidewalls and bent rims. Ugh.

The 19s on my '22 Escape actually have more sidewall than my OEM tires in years.

Ditto.

Ordered my BL without moonroof.

Dog can stick his head out the rear port hole.

Let's put the 1.5L vs 2.0 L in perspective. Let's look at 0-60 times and Quarter mile times.

https://www.carhp.com/ford/bronco-sport/0to60

0-60 1.5L 9.2 seconds
0-60 2.0L 7.7 seconds
So, 1.5 seconds difference 0-60

1/4 mile 1.5L 16.7 seconds
1/4 mile 2.0L 15.4 seconds
So 1.3 seconds difference in the standing quarter mile.

The difference is almost nothing
In 1/4 mile talk, that is a huge difference

7.7 seconds is also very wrong not sure how they got that. I did two runs with my car one was 7.2 and the other was 6.8. Both uphill and in hot weather. Given better conditions is likely get it down to 6.5 or a bit lower.
