In the latest episode Tim The Ford Guy mentions a few things (I hope I got it right)
  • There are 6 more months of 2020 model production. If you have a "scheduled build date" your vehicle is expected to be produced in the 2022 model year.
  • Dealer stock allocations will not be a priority through the month of may.
    • Customer orders will be priority
My dealership just got 3 more new vehicles on the Ford.com search with the status of "dealer ordered." 2/3 have Assist+ and at least 1 has the tow package. If they are scheduling stock vehicles with things known or believed to be constraints then Ford isn't operating their priority system as advertised. Granted, these are all BB, so maybe it's just BL that can't have nice things for other reasons.

When it comes to shipping vehicles without parts there will be two ways this is handled. (Do not ask me about engine covers)
  1. Recall Shortage: Missing parts will be handled like a recall. Ford will invite you back to the dealer like a recall and install the part.
  2. Drop Shortage: You just don't get the part and this is noted on the Window Sticker with a note and credit($).
New Explorers are coming off the line in Chicago with a blank cover on the rear temperature control panel along with this on the window sticker:

REAR AUXILIARY CLIMATE CREDIT ($50)
I wish Ford would give custom orders the option to delay your build until the vehicle can be built 100% as advertised. I understand that many “need” their vehicle because their current one is dying, I get it. If I could, I would gladly give up my build slot to someone that needs this car.

For me, and maybe some of you, I can wait and would rather not have my window sticker show multiple “Recall or Drop Shortage” lines all over it. I’m not slated to be built until May so maybe parts inventory will change by then, who knows. Even though it will be close to 6-7 months of waiting, I’m 100% comfortable walking away from this vehicle and waiting out the automobile industry to get back to the norm.

I agree, would be nice to have a choice.
At least you've received Production and Scheduling info. Placed an order 1 week earlier with same content, except no moonroof - so who can figure the scheduling mystery? The longer in limbo makes you wonder what might get added to the ship short list. I'd kinda like what I think I originally ordered.

I ordered my Badlands at the end of October. Arrived at the dealer a week ago. No premium or 360+, but included tow and cargo management. At the time, I was told 360+ was a constraint. Based on what I’ve witnessed in the chip world, it’s not an all or nothing thing. Batches get released and distributed. They use what they can and try to build complete vehicles. The less you have the better your chances. But, I’d say order what you want. Some things are difficult if not impossible or really expensive to add later.
I agree, getting what you want the first time around Is always cheaper rather than having to do it twice.

The Ford Guy said this is a bad time to order accessories with the vehicle. He gave an actual example of a shortage of full sized Bronco custom orders with the tonneau cover accessory. If there is a stack of Moonroofs and Premium Packages sitting there but there are no tonneau covers, the other orders go on (and you miss the schedule).

That is the million dollar question. It seems either cruel or incompetent, but it's hard to imagine it could be completely one or the other.

Let’s say you check the box for the cargo organizer in your factory custom order. The Ford Guy said this is a bad time to order accessories with the vehicle. If there is a stack of Moonroofs and Premium Packages sitting there but there are no $110 cargo managers, you miss the schedule.
Very true. If you want it though & it can’t be added economically after the fact, then it could be worth it if you can wait. But this is exactly what my dealer told me too. Don’t bother checking off the floor mats & cargo liners & all the accessories that could be bought through parts (which he gave me a lower quote than factory anyways) since every check box has the potential to delay your vehicle further even if it seems like it shouldn‘t be a constraint.

The CMS is a tricky one because it's over $1k to get the parts and do it after the fact. I suppose I could live without it if that was holding up the build, but that slide out shelf will be so convenient when I'm out with my camera.

Agree. I believe one insanely expensive option to add after the fact is the Cargo Management system. Someone did a breakdown of the parts and pricing to add later, if I recall correctly was around $1,000 vs $110. It wasn't just the table, both rear interior side panels among other things.

I had no idea. My first $1000 in BSBL accessories is going for engine cover, under dash panel, protection/noise panels underneath, hood insulator, headrests, spare tire, tow hook thingy..

Yup. Wasn’t an option for me to give up CMS and neither was tow. I’ve added tow to many vehicles and would have done it again but was assured at the time it wasn’t going to be an issue. Floor mats, cargo mats, roof racks, mud flaps all bought separately. The only items I really wanted from premium were the homelink and remote start. Siri opens the door when I ask nicely and Ford Pass starts the car from miles away. Need to pick your battles unfortunately. Someday we will laugh about this…..no probably just bitch more.

I only got the things I want, which are Badlands trim for the better capabilities and bigger engine, CMS, and the 360+ on the recommendation of a coworker. All the other bobs and bits can be added later, probably at lower cost and from a greater variety of items.

Picked up my Badlands today. Just shy of 3 months from order to delivery so I feel fortunate. Trailer tow, premium package, carbonized gray roof.
Congrats. That’s a record on timing for sure.
