Towing a tent trailer

I have a 2021 Sport Badlands and am hoping to tow a small tent trailer (around 1400 lbs dry weight).

Can someone comment on their experience with towing a tent trailer with this model of bronco? specifically, hoping to get confirm on the following:

1 - Do you use a drop ball mount? if so, how much drop?
2 - have you been ok with the class 2 hitch (no breaks) towing your tent trailer?
3 - any other advice on towing a small tent trailer? I dont want to damage my new BS

I cant comment on the BL, but I have a big bend 1.5 and a 1300 lb trailer, it struggles for sure up hills.

Anything over 1000lbs should have its own breaks, and some states require it.

Also, my MPG drops from 26 or 27 down to 15 MPG.

Thanks for the input. I know the big bed tows 200 lbs less. Here in Ontario, Canada, trailer brakes are only required for anything over 3500lbs. In the badlands manual, they recommend trailer brakes for any trailer over 1,500lbs.

Do you use a rose mount or drop mount for your hitch?

Mine is a 2" rise, but it depends of course on tongue weight. I think its one of those things you just have to play around with till you get it right. I recently descended a 1500 ft drop in about 1 mile, and was glad to have the trailer breaks!!

Rise or drop will depend on the trailer tongue height and load, the trailer should be level when hitched, so you'll need to refer to the trailer manufacturer for specs.

I've towed a teardrop style trailer (467kg/1050lbs) with my BB (1.5L) for the last 2 years, mountains and all without any significant issues at all, My gas mileage increases about 15% in the hills. I use a class 2 hitch, no trailer brakes and the BB handles very well under load, again no issues even when towing in rain and sleet in the mountains. Don't skimp on your tires! Both on the Badlands AND the trailer, make sure they are well rated for where you are going. Myself I use Nokian Outpost APTs in the Summer and Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV for the winter.

I don't think you'll have any issues with your Badlands and the 2L towing what you are proposing. Happy Camping!!

I have a 2022 Badlands and tow a variety or trailers, utility , boat, and two travel trailers 12', about the same weight as your tent trailer, and a 15' that weighs a bit more. Drop depends on the height of the trailer coupler, it should sit level when hitched. Using the factory hitch. I did add air bags to the rear, helps keep the Bronco level. Both my travel trailers have electric brakes, the other trailers do not. The travel trailers are made in Millgrove Ontario Canada, Taylor Coach.
