Tires Size with stock height

I’ve been reading threads of people putting 245/65 r17 on their BS but everywhere I go I am told they will rub without a leveling or lift. Thoughts?
Just installed Falken Wildpeak 245 65 R17 with no leveling kit an NO rubbing, very happy with the driving sensation of the new tires, and the look is amazing!

I’m going to say it again, just to have it recorded everywhere people are asking this question. A lift kit (spacers or tall springs) does not change if a tire will rub, only at what point in the articulation the rub will happen. If you aren’t going to go off-road then you are probably safe with a 30” tire but if you are going to push the vehicle to it’s limit (or close) then you want a 29.5” tire, lift or no lift.

If you aren’t going to go off-road then you are probably safe with a 30” tire but if you are going to push the vehicle to it’s limit (or close) then you want a 29.5” tire, lift or no lift.
There's more to it than that, but to say lifting a vehicle isn't a method of preventing tire to body contact is just blatantly false.

There's more to it than that, but to say lifting a vehicle isn't a method of preventing tire to body contact is just blatantly false.
It isn't a method of preventing tire to body contact, that contact will happen just when the suspension is in a slightly different compression. Yes, it is a simplification because the geometry is more complex. If you can lift the vehicle by say 4"+ and you don't change the suspension travel, then maybe you will avoid contact. For the 1.5-2" of lift for the BS, you will only change when the rub will happen, not if it will happen. If you want to build a mall crawler with 33" tires and 2" lift, you will be fine until you go through a dip in a corner and that tire will rub (if not remove your fender).

Again, 29.5" tires are safe at all suspension travel and steering angles by all evidence here. If you step up to 30" tire there are going to be positions where you will get tire rub. Going bigger than that only increases the positions where rubbing will occur. There are those that are trimming/bending and pushing back the wheel well liner. It's not recommended but it is your vehicle, do what you want.

So people should stop lifting vehicles to fit bigger tires…..Lol, ok.

I’ve built plenty of mall crawlers with a combination
of lifts, proper wheel offset and fender manipulation to fit bigger tires.
It would not have worked without the lift portion of that equation.

Your pictures are excellent proof that the lift does not change “if” the tire will rub, just “when” it will rub. That tire still has to go into the wheel well, the lift just changes when. Every one of your pictures shows that. Of course I am still talking about the limited lift that can be done on the BS. If you actually start changing suspension geometry, the outcome could be different. A spacer lift or lift springs do not change suspension geometry.

29.5” tire is the safe bet. It seems that somewhere between 29.5” and 30” is where rubbing starts. That being said the listed diameter is not 100% accurate because different manufacturers and even different tire models will be slightly larger or smaller. So what is listed as a 29.5” could be 29.75”. It doesn’t sound like much but the rubbing starts at some diameter and that appears to be between 29.5 and 30. Now, 30 will not rub all the time, only at the extreme. From reading lots of tire threads here, it seems once you get to 30.5” the rubbing will happen much more frequently, maybe even on road.

245/65/17 is the safe bet, which is a 29.5” diameter.

Other than appearance, reduced fuel economy, and added weight is there a reason to upsize the tires? Gain, what, a quarter inch of ground clearance maybe?

Taller sidewall for dealing with rocky trails. I live in a place named Rockies. Also a bigger contact patch, which helps for sandy/soft stuff. Not better for rain/mud/snow. Yes, they do look better too, IMHO.

Well maybe for the second set. I'm not upgrading the upgraded tires that are coming on mine. I debated on upgrade with or after the build but chose the easiest path, plus the price to just get the Falkens without the faux steelies is a pretty darn good deal. I suspect I'll be happy with the upgraded stock tires just because I'll finally be done with this gutless wonder of a nissan.
