The 2.0 in sport mode is great. I traded in a V8 Challenger and while the 2.0 definitely isn't on the same scale it has a lot of get up and go and I am pleased with the performance.
I suspect it would surprise more than a few people. Maybe not a V8 Challenger, but I bet it would give a few "sports cars" a run for their money. It's a relatively light vehicle for the amount of power available, especially if you're using premium fuel.

It definitely is light... my Challenger was like 1000 lbs heavier. ? I am running premium... just had my first fillup and will be tracking the MPG performance just to satisfy my curiousity even though I really don't care. This purchase was to satisfy the craving for a vehicle that could perform in all conditions while being aesthetically pleasing. ?

These are completely different vehicles, for sure. What the Badlands has in the power train and true 4x4 system puts it in a completely different category from the other BS trims, as far as I'm concerned. It really is a case of the Badlands and "everything else".

There is no "Right" choice. Everybody has their own priorities and decision variables. Obviously, many people are very happy with their Base, BB, and OB Bronco Sports.

But for me and my house, I wouldn't own a BS unless it's the Badlands.

My understanding is all the trims are just awd. The only read difference is a dual clutch rear diff and a water cooled vs air cooled power takeoff unit. No real transfer in any bronco sport or a low range.

these are no small differences, to be sure. The locking rear differential alone puts the Badlands on a completely different level of capabilities. They have different suspensions. There are additional GOAT driving modes, including rock crawl, which is similar to a true low range gear. Don’t underestimate the cooling systems. There are numerous examples of the nonBadlands transmissions overheating and shutting down. You don’t hear that of the Badlands. There is a reason why Ford only invites the Badlands model for the Bronco Off Road events and not any of the other BS trims. These models really can’t be compared to each other. They share sheet metal and design. But they are very different vehicles.

Rock crawl just changes the throttle response/trans response, and selects the "4x4" and "rear lock". There is no low-range gear. I agree the BL is more capable but not all that much different when you get down to it. Dual clutch rear, suspension, and software buttons.

Take the BigBend I doubt you’ll be dis-satisfied. It has more options an just as capable of a 4 wheel drive system for what you plan on doing with it. If I had a do over I would si down with a salesman and order a Badlands. But I’m very happy with my BB that I literally purchased after the worker drove it off the truck. It was my first time seeing one, I didn’t even know about the different models. I liked the one I test drove so I purchased it on the spot. Good Luck in your Decision.

I haven't heard about transmissions overheating. Power transfer units, yes, but not transmissions. There have also been a few reported cases of overheating the PTU in a Badlands, but the people involved acknowledge they were driving like idiots.

While it's true there isn't an actual "granny" gear, the 2.0L makes significantly more torque than the 1.5L, and torque is the coin of the realm when you're off road. This is also why a locking rear diff is so important. The Bronco Sport is a unibody design, which severely limits suspension articulation. Less suspension articulation means greater change in the amount of weight on each wheel, which affects traction. In situations where one wheel on each axle loses traction, the system attempts to get power to the wheels that do have traction by applying the brakes on the wheels that are slipping. Using brakes to attenuate engine power reduces the amount of torque available. A locking rear diff allows a 50-50 split of the torque going to the rear axle with no reduction in available torque. And don't forget, the Badlands starts out with a great deal more torque to begin. All-in-all, in some situations you can get far more torque to the ground with a Badlands, and that's a significant advantage when off road.

So yes, there isn't much mechanical difference in the drive systems, but they are very different functionally.

To be honest with the low 1st gear ratio and the amount of low-end torque the 2.0 makes, I am pretty the low range gear won't be missed much unless in a really serious situation. Would I rather have it? Yes, but not so sure needed with the flexibility this motor has.

Cross post from Reddit but would appreciate any advice!

I have the option of getting a dealer ordered Big Bend or Badlands which are both being delivered next month and can't decide which one I want.

The Big Bend is Hot Pepper red and fully loaded with options: Moonroof, Copilot assist +, Convenience package, trailer tow package, cargo package, wireless charging pad.

The Badlands is Carbonized gray with no options other than added floor mats but it's only $1000 more than the big bend. I've only been able to test drive the Bronco Sport first edition and really enjoyed the 2.0 so I gravitate toward that engine.

I don't see myself ever towing anything and would mainly use it for a daily driver and road trip vehicle. I do live in the Midwest with a decent amount of hills and snowy weather and dirt roads but won't do much off roading otherwise.

I'm not crazy about the Gray color of the Badlands and the lack of the moonroof or Assist + but other than that I think I prefer the badlands.

Did anyone have a similar situation or can offer advice?
I have a Big Bend with just about everything on it. The two things mine does not have is the tow package and moonroof. The extra safety add-ons for road trips are great! I fully understand the pull of the Badlands, but as many said, for a daily driver with road trips I would go with the loaded Big Bend.

For me it just boils down to wanting the 2.0L engine in a vehicle loaded with options as a daily driver.

This one came in to a local dealer and I grabbed it before someone else did. It had everything I would have added if I ordered and was the perfect color... so I bought it.

Lots of on and off road adventuring possibilities here in the PNW... and I am glad I went with the Badlands trim for that reason. The 2.0L in sport mode is a lot of fun.

If I was in your situation and didn't like the color and the vehicle didn't have all the options I wanted I'd probably have went in a different direction.

Just going out on a limb here, but guessing it's because he has a chance to trade out the Big Bend for a Badlands....
