Possibly and ChatGPT concurs spark plugs can cause rhythmic tachometer surging (however not as OP described)

ChatGPT’s description for torque converter issue most closely matches OPs description of the problem

case closed 😉

Let's also not forget that ChatGPT used to give recommendations on how many rocks to eat per serving. It's also still citing legal precedents that don't exist.

I prefer to trust its answers somewhere to the south of Snopes and Wikipedia.

It's just fancy auto-complete more or less. If someone else had the same problem and wrote an accurate description then cool. Otherwise it will invent "facts" to make you happy.

Agreed but in this case I cross checked ChatGPT’s answers regarding the issue OP listed (“RPMs will jump up and down a few hundred RPMs almost once every second”) to what the torque converter could cause and what bad or old spark plugs could cause and various automotive sources concurred most likely is the typical 8F35 transmission torque converter shudder.

that’s all I was looking for so I’d concur with the person that posted that it is the torque converter causing OPs issue based on OPs description

I give ChatGPT (as well as other AI tools) the same wary eye as with any other source on the internet.

To not use AI (or to dismiss AI being a “fancy auto-complete more or less”) likely is missing out now-a-days but cross checking any source is needed depending on how much you need to have valid and accurate information.

Those that wish to stay away from AI that’s their own choice

With 112,000 miles on it with the original plugs they very well may be bad IMO.

I'll say it if no one else will.

If you allow your vehicle to drive almost an 8th of a million miles without changing the spark plugs, what other things in terms of maintenance have been ignored?

Spark plugs? Torque converter? Transmission fluid?

I say all of the above.

Any update yet?
Just got the call from the repair shop. They flushed the transmission fluid twice then added the stuff from your post. The car is still having the shudder so they did more digging and found that the issue is coming from the rear differential. We're waiting on a quote from a Ford dealership since the parts are on back order

So we bought the car at 78k miles! But I understand where your concerns are coming from.

Gotcha. The spark plugs are easy (and cheap) enough to replace and rule out as the culprit. Hopefully it's just that.

Once we go pick it up from the repair shop I plan on grabbing the spark plugs and replacing those while we price out a rear dif replacement

I would change the plugs to rule that out. I would try putting the BS up on 4 jack stands and run it through the gears and see what it does.Or just put it in Neutral with it up on the 4 jack stands and turn the rear wheels by hand and see if something doesn't feel right.
