Does anyone know if that's a speaker or microphone next to the piece of paper?

do you mean below and to the left of the paper?
if so, those are ports for plugging in your phone, to use CarPlay

I believe the speaker is on the headliner near the outside.
end of the driver's sun visor

That’s neat. My CarPlay adapter just sits in the space next to the wireless charger.

Those USB ports generate a bit of heat when they are used, so as someone suggested, those holes are to allow for cooling. As long as your adapter doesn't cover the holes I think you'll be fine.

Thanks! Bought a Bluetooth carplay adaptor and wasn't sure if I could mount it there.
I have mine just sitting above in the spot. No Velcro needed and no apparent overheating issues.
