This was 2021…limited data and all.

2024, CR revised the reliability after a couple years of data collection. 2021 and 2022 received many red Xs - I can list them if you want, with 2023s showing much better reliability. Unfortunately though, that has hit the Bronco’s rating.

edit, a screenshot of the updated rating:

Is there any way to show some of the interesting metrics about the 2023? I don't have a CS membership and am curious.

Here's the page with more specifics. Good thing I don't have a F150 hybrid.

For the most part, CR has been a good resource for my research on cars and other major purchases. However, the last car I got, Forester, was problematic from the get-go. To me that tells me nothing is 100% guaranteed to be perfect no matter 'who' endorses it.

Yeah, I hate to admit it, but I bought an extended warranty and started a little monthly savings plan when I chose my ‘23 OBX over the CRV to deal with the increased odds of some problems cropping up. (No data guys & gals, just my own bias and perceptions) Hoping I don’t need it and the $ will fund the next car purchase in 10 years, but if not it will ease the pain of keeping this car I am loving so much after 6 months. And after all, I might not do too well in a reliability survey sent to my wife who was also lured in by curb appeal, so who am I to judge?

Had the manual release cable replaced on my 2021 BSBL with less than 1,000 miles on it. Now at 26,000 miles and nothing but bliss. I like it so well that I just ordered a 2024 Maverick with the same 2.0 engine.

Brono Sport Ratings = Brakes means, when reversing. Fuel System mean, 1.5 fuel injectors. Climate System means, 1.5 water pumps. Most of the trouble are 1.5L engine models. Just saying. Have no issues at all with my Badlands.

In the latest "Consumer Reports" the Bronco Sport ranks dead last in compact SUV reliability with a 32. The Subaru Crosstrek had a 99.
I had the first year Crosstrek and hated it. And so many on the used lots back then. So many things…Don’t buy first year of new model is my takeaway.

I don’t care what CR says we love our BSBB even with the 1.5. We also have a big Bronco Black Diamond and an F-250 Tremor, guess which one we use the most? The Bronco Sport, it’s the most fun to drive around town and gets great gas mileage too! At some point we might upgrade to the Badlands for the 2 liter and the LSD but that’s only if ours starts giving us any problems. Rock on Bronco Sport!

Without wholesale copying it, the 21/22 are below average powertrain (variety of things), 2023 is above average. What ranks varies, but the real dinger is below average fuel system in the 21/22 (1.5 fuel injectors assumedly they don't detail that out beyond the rating), well above average reliability 23. This may have been an issue fixed in the recall earlier and thus not present in 2023 MY (mostly).

For the 21 and 22 Brakes far below average reliability, well above average 2023. Whether this is because Ford "fixed" the brakes on the 23 or owners haven't encountered it yet (give it time) remains to be seen.

Climate system (1.5 water pumps) is average in the 21, far below average 22, and slightly above average in the 23.

The 23 MY being ranked "below average reliability" overall seems to be some blending of the 21/22MY (which have the same rating overall). No rating on the 23 MY is less than just average, and the overwhelming majority are above average...

38,000 on my '21 OB and zero issues other than the recall on the fuel injector issue, which was actually NOT a fuel injector issue, just a possible fuel pooling issue if a highly reliable fuel injector fails.

Very happy with the OB, fun and great for WI winters.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this out. Much appreciated!

With all the complaints here, I can believe it but like me, CR has always been a fan of Japanese brands..
The key is "like me". You and I and a lot of other people. Certain brands and models become popular for a reason(s). Price, performance, reliability, safety, mpg.

CR gets their reliability info from their subscribers -- millions of them -- as well as NHTSA recall information. They use those sources to determine the overall reliability score.

They are just the messenger. In recent years, some American models have been top-rated.

The CR rating was initially good when I checked it before ordering our BS BL 2 years ago (12/21), but the subsequent recalls knocked it down -- and CR does not differentiate between the 1.5L models and the 2.0L BS BL.

Granted, recalls are not good, but IMO they should not affect reliability scores as much as random failures and breakdowns. At least recalls are performed and then (presumably) that issue is eliminated.

IOW, once recall repairs are completed, a vehicle might be extremely reliable. My WRX was like that. It had several recalls but then it was rock-solid reliable, even running a Cobb Stage 2 tune.
