I feel like half of the threads now are ruined by a 2.0 owner pissing on peoples decisions to purchase a 1.5L. 1.5L satisfies my needs, 2.0 satisfies yours...who cares. I paid cash for mine which I couldn't have done stepping up to a Badlands. Financial responsibility, especially in todays world, is the flex that should be preached.

We all own a Bronco Sport. A low cost car based vehicle from Ford. Chill with all of the ego stroking.

Your advice in your case about paying cash is sage advice! “never finance a depreciating asset”

Not everyone can do that of course but for those that can it often makes better financial success (unless they get an awesome finance rate and making more in the markets)

No doubt, 100% agree. I was just attempting to make a point. The Bronco Sport is a great vehicle regardless if it is a 25K Base or the 40k Badlands. There so much talking down on the non Badlands/FE, that it's always good to remember your personal price point and not be swayed by some random person online.

It's like the Jeep guys at my work. Yea super clean Rubicon that you just bought, but your bank owns it for the next 7 years....

The market choice is restricted by Ford only putting the 2.0L in its highest price trims and in the case of the BS, limiting that Badlands to 15% of production. In short, the market has limited choice, because of production limits and pricing.
this only happened because the 2.0 in the previous generation Escape didn’t sell very well…back then, the 2.0 was available as a small cost option over the 1.6 and then over the 1.5…you could get it right in the SE but the smaller engine continued to be the buyer’s preference…

so when Ford launched the new Escape and then the BS, they saw no point in making order more complex - again 90% of sales for both the Escape and BS are 1.5, many don’t want the gas penalty and shy away from the bigger engine.

The price of the Bad Lands was out of my price range like a 5k-6k difference in base price over the Big Bend IIRC.I could have lived with the Mileage of the Bad Lands after having a 21 3.5 Eco Boost F-150 before the Bronco Sport.FWIW i got 30.2 mpg last night on a 160 mile round trip with the cruise control set on 75 mph most of the trip. And i was happy with the performance had no problems power wise up hills or passing people.

blueoval,
i have the BSBL and just got 30mpg on the highway and with my average around town it will be about 26mpg when i fill up. i think it depends on your drive style and if you have elevation changes to your roadways... (i.e. hills). for me it sounds like im getting the same mpg as you.
but i find that in my other vehicle (which im not allowed to talk about here) i only get about 9mpg
i think you could figure which one that might be....

To be fair i did have 3 days of back and forth to work on the Bronco before my trip.So i'm sure if i would have filled up before and after just the trip i would have got over 30 mpg as i think i was at 27 mpg before the trip. And yes i remember the guy complaining about us showing pictures of our Mustangs on a Bronco site[i'm guessing you're talking about the Boss 302 Mustang]?

Agree, Ford choice is restricted. I purchased my Badlands primarily because I wanted the 2.0L engine. If the Outerbanks had the 2.0L as a choice I probably would have went for that.

I am sure the restricted choice is more about meeting CAFE mileage standards than anything else which in turn steers consumers to the smaller engines. By restricting the choice of engine Ford is trying to keep the average corporate mpg rate up.

Similar position on the Outer Banks.

And yes, you're 100% correct: The only reason Ford doesn't offer the 2.0L across the line is to keep CAFE numbers down.

Same reason why Jeep doesn't offer the 392 (or any other V8) in the Gladiator, and scores of other companies provide a lower-output, fuel efficient motor across the line with the more powerful lump only at the halo level. The fines from the Feds increase exponentially based on how far over the CAFE number the manufacturer goes.

Except Ferrari and Porsche.. They don't care about CAFE standards quite conspicuously and famously- and pay the fine every year.

Because they get it back in the sticker price.
Certainly that has something to do with it, and generally those fines are recouped at point of sale further increasing the amount the consumer has to outlay, regardless of manufacturer, Government policies always directly contribute to price increases felt by the consumer.

But where CAFE really comes into play is the multiplying effect based on the number of units sold coupled to the amount over the CAFE MPG number.

As the manufacturer sells more units, the CAFE fines become exponentially more expensive and in the past few years downright draconian: for every .1 MPG over the CAFE number until 2019 it was $5.50 per every .1 over. Now it's $15 per every .1 mpg.

In real numbers it will cost Ford over $1B, GM over $6.5B, and Stellantis over $3B in for 2024 and going forward based on 2023 CAFE numbers. $10B+ to hit MPG numbers set by bureaucrats none of us voted for and cannot hold accountable.

Ultimately it is all a shell game- If Ford restricts the availability of the higher performance motor (1.5 vs 2.0 in the BS for example) to the top trim level, the gross majority sold will help to offset that CAFE number. I don't know what the delta is between trims but I'd suspect the BL, FE, and HL's are a small fraction of overall BS sales.
