Look up the transmission cooler part numbers. There's a difference between the tow package cooler and the rest. Just because Ford doesn't list it in their sales lit doesn't mean it's not part of the package. I towed 2,000+ pounds up some long inclines and watched the transmission temp go way up...
You didn't add the tow package as it also involves a larger transmission cooler installed at the factory for higher towing capacity. You added a hitch and 4 pin wiring which still limits you to 1,500 pounds max.
The main problem is the transmission overheating. I have a temp gauge to keep an eye on mine. Secondary is the tongue weight as it should typically be at least 10% of the trailer weight to avoid sway. So a 220 pound tongue limit puts you at 2,200 pounds. At a minimum of 10%, more tongue weight...
I tow 2K with no problems. I wouldn't tow in the mountains with it though. The transmission/cooling is the limitation along with the 220# limit hitch weight (suspension). Neither is made for towing more than the Sport 1.5/2k or 2.0/2.2K rating with the Factory 53B tow package.
What hasn't been stated so far is that if you are adding a hitch, doesn't matter who's and even if it's a FORD OEM hitch installed by the dealer you are still limited to a 1,500 pound tow capacity. Does not matter what the hitch itself is rated for either. The 2,000/2,200 tow rating is only if...
Been using a Scan Gauge II on the Sport since the beginning.
There's a ScanGauge III out now that programs itself but it's a lot larger. The II gives me everything I need for towing with the Sport.
It also leaves out that Package 53B (note 2) is required for towing and you should refer to the Ford towing guide.
Nothing has changed from 2021 to 2023.
Next time it's up in a lift and the covers are off if I'm there. You have the part numbers above. Have your parts guy look them up using your VIN and a VIN with the tow package from the factory.
I went through that with two dealers before I purchased mine. Took getting the reps involved. They are clueless and want to sell you a car. Unless they're putting in the larger transmission cooler you'll still be at 1,500 no matter what they tell you. Get it in writing that you can safely tow...
There's a lot of misinformation here.
You have a 1,500 pound tow limit unless you have the tow package installed at the factory. It has nothing to do with the hitch or sway control.
The factory tow package has a limit of 2,000 pounds. Without it, just adding any hitch gives you a limit of 1,500...
and it should be mentioned for towing 2,000 pounds you should have the factory installed tow package. Just adding the hitch doesn't give you the larger transmission cooler the tow package gives you.
