I am stuck at around 22-24.5 mpg - i haven't noticed anything wrong with the vehicle - it seems to be responsive and accelerates fine i think - but I read that it could have something to do with the engine changing from 2 to 3 cylinders, or something like that? I can't tell when it changes, is there any way to know when it switches on the third cylinder?

These are boxy vehicles that although small in size are not exactly lightweight. The weight is a big factor for acceleration; the harder you accelerate the more fuel required. The 1.5L engine is capable of accelerating the Bronco Sport to 60 mph in under 8 seconds, but if you do it all the time your mileage will suffer. The boxy shape affects mileage on the highway. Higher speed requires more power which requires more fuel. Anything over 70 mph will have a significant impact on mileage.

You can't beat the laws of physics. EcoBoost engines offer owners a choice between power & efficiency. TANSTAAFL. Eco or boost; you must choose.

your vehicle is still new as well, once you start adding kms to it, mpg should increase a bit.
My mileage bumped up about 2mpg at 2,200 miles. It was almost abrupt in improvement.

Which trim do you have? On my obx, I’m always on the screen that shows how efficient i’m driving (the screen above the default odometer one). Adaptive cruise control brings it up too.

whats ‘TANSTAAFL’ lol?
and i totally agree with you, the shape of the sport is not one for aerodynamics.

Excessive use of remote start can impact fuel economy also.

Did you put bigger tires on it? I put 245's up from the factory 225's, so I don't have anything to compare it to. Getting the bigger/heavier tires moving requires more gas I'm sure. During the summer months best I could get was 28mpg in Eco mode. Now in the winter I get maybe 25mpg.

Acceleration does make a difference. I believe you want to get through the gears fairly quick, but not too quickly. Accelerating I try to keep the rpms under 3k for best mpg. I notice that the mpg readout will stay steady moving through the gears quickly. If I accelerate slowly, holding that rpm close to 3k a little longer the mpg readout will drop.

Another thing that bugs me or I am mindful about, is the turbo. Early morning winter months, everything is cold. I keep the acceleration to a minimum until it's up to operating temp to get the oil and turbo warmed up.

That's my take, I'm still learning how to best use an automatic tranny, with a turbo. Had manuals all my life.
