What is really dumb about all this is that a lot of people saw this problem coming from the start. The auto manufacturers went all in with this along with spending millions of dollars only to find out they had already had a system that worked perfectly well and wasn‘t broken.
Reminds me of the "everyone wants an EV" nonsense.

The problem I have with losing buttons for a larger screen... well one of them anyway, is that to some extent it's pointless. The HVAC controls (fan, temp, the button for on and where) as well as heated seat and steering wheel controls are on the bottom of the screen. So the bottom 3/4inch of the screen isn't even used.

It also doesn't need to be done. There is room for both, the larger screen and some more buttons.
We don't need all buttons and knobs or all on the scree, but there is much room for improvement for both.
The knob for volume control is pointless. It's on the steering wheel. I'd much rather have the fan control there. And a temperature control knob. Really those are the two that I want the most. Something I can feel when driving at 70 on the freeway, and I don't have to worry about my finger hitting the wrong button on a rough road. Even bracing my other fingers on the bezel, it still happens that my fingers miss.
That's where voice control comes in to effect. You don't need the knob or the steering wheel buttons.

How does that work when you're on the phone with someone?

Hard to use when you have loud people in the car, or kids who are being loud... or who finally go to sleep and you don't want to wake them.

Or like when I was recovering from a tonsilectomy and a biopsy. Or when you have a bad sore throat.

How about people with speech impediments? Do they deserve to have to take their eyes off the road because they can't pronounce some words or sounds clearly enough?

Could you imagine your typical customer support person telling their Bronco to turn on the heater? Not sure what the results might be! Sorry, not trying to denigrate any customer support person that can actuallly converse in the language the caller is using.

There's no free lunch, is there?

But the very, incredibly, stupidly, easy solution is to put a few more physical buttons people can reach and adjust. Fan speed at a minimum. Add temperature control and it's two small knobs.
there is already buttons for fan speed, temp and so on. why do we needmore?

There are no physical buttons. They are on the screen now.
Other than that I do love this 13.2 inch screen. Especially when using Waze and Android Auto. Either full screen to have a larger map, or split with the music that's playing. And it's great for the cameras, backup of course but also front and 360 when parking, and the off road mode has ones aimed at each front tire.

It is worth the trade, but I'd love if they could have those three buttons.

"Cars with Steve" also has a very thorough overview of the 25 BS tech.

That has nothing to do with the lack of physical buttons for the fan speed, temperature control, or where that air is directed. You still have to use the touch screen buttons to change those.

That's not why I posted this. Simply as a fairly thorough resource for folks trying to figure out the current interface. I haven't used the BS system yet so have no opinion. I'm coming from a 21 Mazda CX-5 with console controlled, no touch screen system with full, traditional HVAC knobs and pushbuttons. I'll give my in-transit 26 BSBL a month of use to understand the pros and cons mentioned here.

I'm sorry. I misunderstood why you posted that.

is that strip part of the actual screen or is it the suround with touch buttons? that looks like the buttons areatouch type built into the surround of the screen as the temp controls are raised. they are doing a1990's throwback

My 2014 is a weird one, some things you have buttons below the screen but something (like heated seats and a few others) you can only do through the screen, and if you click on the climate screen it has way moreoptions than the buttons so I am usedtousing the screen.
