My drivers side headlight DRL’s will light up but not the round headlight portion. I’ve tried turning on the headlight manually from inside, unplugging the battery for about 10 mins, checked fuses, etc. The only time I can get it to pop on for maybe 2 seconds is when I unplug the wiring harness and plug it back in(see video). Otherwise, nothing. The passengers side works perfectly fine. I thought maybe it could be the headlight module? Anyone have any ideas?

How long have both headlamps worked as you expected?

They’ve both been working since I bought it in June.

Yep, sounds like the same exact issue. Everything that person described, is the same mine is doing.

If you have the Ford ESP (extended warranty) with the Interior/Exterior Lighting coverage* that will cover replacement as necessary for the headlamp but I don’t know if that also covers modules that may have failed

You can purchase the ESP for your used vehicle if you meet the requirements - Granger, Zeigler, Flood Ford (and possibly others) sell the Ford ESP at a substantial discount so you can check with them on cost

A new headlamp installed is around $1,500 without the coverage

*Interior/Exterior Lighting: electrical failures on incandescent bulbs, halogen bulbs, high intensity discharge (HID) and LED lamp assemblies. Your chosen deductible of $0, $50, $100 or $200 applies on lighting services the same as for other covered service warranty repairs.

Do you have a code reader to see if it is reporting any codes on the BCM or HCM? If not, message me the VIN and I can pull any codes it is reporting to Ford.

@Ashlovely Got your message, but figured I would post here so the info is out there since it seems to be a somewhat common occurence with these vehciles. Your truck had a very clean history in terms of not reporting any codes until 10/11 when a BCM code started showing. These codes are soft codes that will not trigger a light on your dash.

Of the codes you see on 10/27, the top four that end in 08 are stored codes that may be a byproduct of the the two active faults under.....hard to tell where those came from. However, the two codes ending in 0A are active faults. The fault type of 55 refers to the module not being configured and the 01 fault type cites a general circuit/electrical failure.

These things are very difficult and in most case, impossible to diagnose remotely, but it points to a potentially bad body control module.

Wow, thank you so much for this! That’s extremely helpful. I just wonder if I replace the module myself, if Ford has to do anything else on their end? I thought I saw someone mention the BCM would need to be flashed or something. Maybe that was something different I’m thinking about. Not sure. This stuff is way over my head lol

The BCM itself is pretty easy to get to and to swap out. The problem with DIYing the BCM is that it will require FDRS to first program/configure it and then to run PATS on it to program the keys to the new BCM. Even with FDRS, this may not be possible with a non-dealer login. With FDRS, it won't let me update the firmware on my BCM without a NHTSA password or a Ford employee/dealer login. Not on my truck anyway that is on Sync 4. These Sync 3 vehicles are still new to me and I am learning.....not sure if you can program and run PATS on the BCM of one of these without a dealer login.

If this was something simple like a door module (for example), I would tell you to go for it, because I can program a door module with FORScan. However, encrypted procedures like PATS and TRON authorization cannot be run with FORScan.

I think Id be working on retrofitting some older lighting system if that happens to me. I should have done more research before buying one of these new fangled models. The 6G they quoted for an 8 year warranty doesn't sound like such a bad deal now.

As someone who works in the auto business: If long term ownership is the plan, a warranty is an excellent idea. There's a bunch of stuff that gets peddled to you when you are signing the paperwork that you can safely decline, but these newer vehicles are way too complex and expensive to repair to not have a warranty. 99% of the time, those warranties will pay themselves off.
