It's similar to the console I replaced in a Ranger.

There are 2 pieces. There is a cover and then a part actually mounted to the roof under the headliner. The cover pulls off. You pull at the sunglass end with a trim tool. After the retainers pop, you have to pull it back to release the front tabs. There are electrical connections so only go as far as the harness allows until you unclip the electrical harnesses.

Here are the best pics I could grab, from the Ford Parts website. I know you grabbed a stock photo with the sunroof, but both parts are pretty similar.

Excellent post! So good that it was on the first page of Google search results.

Question: What is the best way to release all 4 clips while keeping the console from slipping back into position? Do people use shims?

Sadly, the reason we have to remove the console is that for the 2nd time mice have made a nest up in the headliner. The first time was not bad because the nest was near the center dome light. I removed the light and a shop vac took care of the nest (the mice were gone).

This time, I see from the photos that there is a second piece above the console that is riveted in place. I'm guessing I won't be able to remove the nest material with that piece in place, but I'm not anxious to remove those rivets.

Any suggestions? Can the headliner be pulled down, away from the piece that's riveted?

I'm not convinced from that other pic the upper piece is riveted. I think the two "rivets" mentioned are actually bump stops for the glasses holder. It could be there is a plastic push pin on the harness holding it, or screws in the recessed holes? Yeah, I would use a pair of trim tools to keep the first set unclipped while getting the others.

I haven't messed with my Sport's glasses holder/console. I did take out an A pillar and I was able to gently pull back the headliner over by the door openings. The sunvisor mounts and the handles are also doing a lot of work holding the headliner secure. That was my (now somewhat foolish) attempt to feed a wire back to the roof hole for an antenna. Maybe you can get enough access that way? Taking the whole headliner down is a pain. There are plastic posts and clips glued to the headliner and roof panel respectively. If you gently pull back the headliner above the rear hatch, you can see some of them about 1/3 in the window edges. Seems fragile IMO so I just put mine all back before something broke off or the liner crimped.

This document is referenced on a few threads posted here. I've looked at it a few times for part removal instructions.

Thanks Tim! I hope you're right about the 'rivets' being bump stops. I'll have to remove the console and find out.

I can't see removing the entire headliner. I'm sure it's a PITA, as you said. I've done a lot of mechanical and electrical work over the last 50 years, but no body or interior work to speak of (beyond installing some speakers and head units). It's all but guaranteed that I'd break something if I tried to remove the headliner. If it does have to be removed, I'd reluctantly pay to have it replaced with a new one. That's a last resort.

We need to figure out how the mice are getting in.

I scanned the PDF you linked to. It looks like a lot of good info, but I didn't see anything about the console. I may have missed it, and in any case it'll be helpful in the future.

You're correct -- the "rivets" are soft rubber bump stops for the eyeglasses holder.

I ended up discovering an easy way to remove the console using an ice scraper like this one:

I slipped it between the console and headliner in an attempt to create a gap to make it easier to slip a homemade tool down to the clip. I pried gently on it and the front corner popped free. So I repeated the process for the other 3, I did not use much force and everything looks good.

The mice really made a mess on the topside of the console. We got it cleaned up, but with all of those rectangular recesses it wasn't easy.

The black piece above the console appears to be glued to the headliner. That's really limits access to the area above the headliner. My wife was able to get most of the nest by sticking a crevice tool through an opening in the black piece.

Now I need to figure out how the mice are getting in. I recall someone suggesting the cabin air exhaust vents.

No ties to BugMD other than as a customer, kind of expensive, but the things I’ve used work as advertised. I’ve used the Vamoose pouches in my garage and they seem to repel the little critters, not sure how I‘d use them inside the BS.
