Which fuel is recommended for the 1.5?

I had a '14 Escape with the 2.0. Back then it was rated at 250 HP. I believe that figure was with premium fuel. I believe it was about a 9 HP increase over regular. Ford rates my 1.5 at 181 HP. What octane fuel was used to reach this figure?

Anything with a turbo I go with 93. That doesn't hurt because I don't do too many miles per on the BS.

The owner's manual states:

Your vehicle is designed to operate on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87. For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer.

Maximum horsepower figures are obtained using premium (91 octane or better).

Yes, the engine's maximum power output is 181 hp, and you only get that using premium fuel. Maximum power output can be as much as 10% less using regular.

Even with 18 less hp assuming a maximum 10% loss, you will not notice a thing using premium fuel. I observed zero difference in performance or MPG.

You can see my post earlier about 87, but I have ran into the sluggish engine issues and lagging throttle response. A quick browse of the forum shows a few people with this issue. The common answer is to use premium fuel, which I now do. I have been experimenting with Mid-grade but haven't came to a conclusion yet. Although, I use Upside and save $0.30+/gal so it doesn't sting as bad as it could.

The manual recommends premium (91 octane or better) to get the best performance, meaning the most power. The manual says the car was designed to use 87 octane. You can save yourself a lot of money using 87 octane if you don't need full power.

I keep imagining someone pumping 91 to fuel their Sport for maximum performance and then going in to get a roller dog and a big gulp to fuel themselves.

My BSBB has 10,000 miles. Using 87 gives it plenty of pep. Unless you're drag racing, can't imagine why you would spend all that extra money for premium.

It’s not really that much more. I have only ever used premium in my BS. I figure if it’s $0.80 more per gallon on average and I’ve got 38,000 miles at 20mpg it’s a roughly $1500 increase in gas over that time. Over about 18 months of ownership that’s only $83 a month more. For me that’s worth the added expense to get everything out of the engine.

We each have our personal priorities, and I'm thankful I live in a country where we have the freedom to choose.
