The older I get, the longer I keep vehicles. When I was young I would keep a vehicle 6-12 months, then that changed to 24-48, and now I keep cars several years (my current car is approaching 9 years old.) My current car has been meticulously maintained, but with it approaching 9 years old the concern is more cost/availability of major parts more than anything else.

We have a 2nd gen Ford Escape in the household that is 13 years old with 132,000 miles that we have owned since new. It has been great, but is just starting the trend of nickel and diming us. We do a lot of the repairs ourselves which helps, but $50 here, $20 there, and then some parts that just aren't worth repairing (like a partially functioning CD player that plays just fine but no longer fully ejects CDs; a putty knife with double sided tape on it is needed to pull the CD out.)

The Bronco Sport is on my list, as is the Explorer, as well as the Honda Passport, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and even the Nissan Pathfinder. The problem being that inventory continues to be sparse and "deals" even more so. I don't mind spending the money for a new vehicle, but at the same time refuse to pay dealer markups which are still very, very common in this area.

Mark ups are down on most brands here but not on Hondas. Another reason I went BS over a new Passport.

Nice vehicle! Just priced a Trailsport

Total MSRP as Built
$46,155
I built a 2024 Badlands on the website. With the packages and options I would want, including a couple accessories, the price was $46265.

Interesting that just yesterday I told a friend about the high price for premium of over $5.359 and 2 minutes later this headline flashed up: “Gas prices could fall to $3.25 (Nationwide) by Halloween (2023) as oil plunges”

Now gas nationwide was $3.77 so the fall to $3.25 (if it happens in 3 weeks) is only $0.52 meaning maybe premium falls to about $4.80 which is still high making your CR-V Sport hybrid purchase a very smart move.
Our gas tax is high in Washington. Most of the stations around here (SE WA) are $4.89 and up. A few months ago I went to vancouver for a concert. Just across the bridge into portland, gas was $1 cheaper. The CR-V doesn't require premium but I still see prices not going down to what it was when I bought the BS in late 2021.

I suspect fuel economy will grow in importance in the coming decade. You gotta be happy with the car you’re driving; congrats!
I'm nerding out watching the power flow in the dash. It's kind of a game to get as much regen as possible. There is even a 'B' (battery) mode on the shifter that gives much more regen braking than normal. The Honda hybrid system is basically an engine that turns a generator to charge the battery/power a separate motor that is actually connected to the wheels. In certain situations it is clutched in with the electric motor. They call it an e-cvt but it really isn't a transmission at all. It's a direct drive electric motor. I was worried about the driving feel but it feels like any other honda except the torque is more instant vs the turbo/cvt of the non hybrid. It is weird to hit the start button and not hear the engine turn on.

Congratulations! I cross shopped the Passport, I think a '20 MY. It definitely felt old and I wasn't keen on getting the last model year of a generation. I know they're supposed to be the best but it had really old tech and design.

I'm curious how the AWD Transport will compare to the Bronco Sport regarding off roading. This is my first SUV and now I'm getting into some roadtripping and off highway driving. Nothing too exciting but would the PP have the same confidence.
2020 was just the second year of the Passport, obviously just a two row Pilot basically. So the tech and design goes back to 2016. The front end was refreshed for 2022 and the Trailsport was added. For this generation it's really just an appearance package though. I do like the smaller wheels as my wife hasn't been able to curb the rims since the sidewalls stick out further. All Hondas currently listed on the Honda website are 2024 now except for the Passport and Ridgeline. There hasn't been much info on these two for their next generation which will likely be in line with the new Pilot. The new Pilot looks really good but I don't think it is selling really well. The local dealer has a few on the lot while pretty much every other model is selling as soon as it gets in. My CR-V arrived yesterday and I took it home last night.

I'm surprised Honda didn't go with the CR-V and Pilot front headlight slim design and grill on the '24 Passport. The newer front design looks great to me. I guess Honda will go with that design on the Passport and Ridgeline in the next year or two. Gotta love the 3.5L V6. If the Passport had that newer front design, I'd probably buy one.

I just literally went in the opposite direction - sold my 2021 Passport EX-L AWD and bought a 2023 BS OB. Never even looked at a CRV - had one and got rid of it quickly, the CVT was a deal breaker.

In case anyone cares here are my thoughts after a month of BS ownership:

Passport:
- more room obviously
- more power in all situations
- better AWD system for on- road IMO
- minivan looks
- poor gas mileage. Didn’t care for the cylinder de-activation.
- safety systems are old. Lane centering ping-pongs around the lane. No stop/start adaptive cruise. Many false collision alerts.
- Honda quality is not what it used to be. Four open recalls including the outside mirrors falling off! Numerous issues with the infotainment system causing wiring to be replaced and the dash removed. Note that these issues were not just my truck - it’s all Passports.

BS:
- less room but that is ok for us.
- the 3-cyl is unrefined and has barely adequate power IMO. Really wish the 2.0 was available on the OB trim.
- 10mpg better gas mileage
- looks are much better IMO. I’m no longer looking for my vehicle in a sea of lookalike SUVs and minivans.
- infotainment is much better. Honda sound system is terrible too.
- quality is TBD. I swore I’d never buy another Ford after having to have my first new car bought back under the lemon law. We’ll see how this goes.
- safety systems are two generations better.

We originally thought we were moving closer to grandchildren so the Passport made sense from a room perspective and I’ve always been a Honda guy. Once we drove the BS we decided to get it and we don’t regret the decision.

That’s my $0.02 anyway. Passport is a good vehicle overall. Just didn’t fit our needs any more YMMV.

The 24 passport isn't out yet. Nothing has even been announced about the 24 model. If it isn't discontinued it's a safe bet that it will move to the new Pilot platform with the new engine and 10 speed transmission. Barring a few style differences I imagine it will look similar to the Pilot. I've heard that the 10 speed is a big improvement over the 9 speed which I am not a fan of. Theres a noticeable delay when using the push button gear selector and it is super slow to kick down.

I just traded mine for a CR-V Sport hybrid in urban gray pearl. Gas is $5 a gallon here (and no sign of it going down anytime soon) and I really like the idea of 40mpg around town.
How does that math work? Will you save money after accounting for depreciation, taxes, etc? I’m all for changing vehicles on a regular basis, but the total MPG has to be huge for it to really make sense financially.

Of course, that’s pretty much how I got here from my previous Grand Cherokee Trailhawk V8 ?

Look before you leap. ;)
There are youtube videos that are out on the '24 model. No real changes other than a wider center console.

The Passport in the Pilot style probably hit when the Ridgeline is changed too.

Welp, no all new passport yet. I probably missed it because Honda doesn't show any sneak peaks for vehicles that aren't change specifically on their website. I have been checking their site for the upcoming vehicles which is where they preview all new model upgrades. I wonder if the Ridgeline is going to be updated or the same as 23. I do like the real AT tires. Ours has regular tires with sidewals mad to look like AT tires.

Mostly psychological I guess. Honda depreciation is quite low. Not much taxes due to the trade in. Hell I paid zero in taxes on the BS because my trade in (19 ranger) was worth way more than the msrp. In WA you only pay sales tax on the difference when you trade in. So for the CR-V taxes were only on about $8k.
