Excuse my ignorance....can you get an EV with a manual transmission?

Quite all right, no need to apologize. I wasn’t talking about EV trucks. I was reacting to the commentator who mentioned the extremely high cost of a new gasoline powered pick up truck. I may be wrong, but I thought the guy was talking about a new gas truck for $88,000 . I ventured my opinion that I’d rather pick up an old, rust free, plain Jane, option free truck and update it, rather than buy a new truck.

As with so many things these days, both sides of the issue go too far to the extremes. EVs are great (even superior) for certain use cases, but poor for others. We own both a 2021 Mustang Mach-E and a 2023 Bronco Sport. Love them both. Most of our miles go on the Mach-E because we're on good position for it. We have a house with a garage where I could install a 240V charger and easily charge overnight on residential electricity that's about 1/3rd the price of gas per-mile. But I'd never buy an EV if I didn't have that capability (say, lived in an apartment). Easy/cheap home charging is the #1 advantage of an EV, IMO, that makes it worth considering paying $10k-$20k more than a comparable gas vehicle.

The routes we frequently road trip are pretty will covered with fast chargers too (DCFC). Which per-mile is pretty much the same as gas. But many other parts of the country don't have decent coverage yet.

Many people just aren't in a good situation for an EV. And many don't have the money to spend that much more up-front (even if getting much back in fuel savings over the life of the car).

Those pushing hard to mandate EVs are often unrealistic and unreasonable. As are those that say they're terrible and you can't drive one more than 100 miles. Both extremes are wrong. The US will likely settle into a mixed market for at least the next decade+. Some ICE, some hybrid, some EV. By 2030, I'm expecting roughly 1/3rd each market share, but it's anyone's guess at this point. EVs are all about the batteries. They're still very expensive right now (albeit much cheaper than a decade ago). They continue to get better and cheaper, but they have a long way to go. The better/cheaper they get, the more market share EVs will gain.

Great points.

Is there an option for an EV car/SUV to be equipped with a manual transmission?

I guess not.
Porsche has a two speed rear end on a couple of EV’s. In general it’s not needed because of how the electric motors work and create power.

that's right, I read about this as well.

basically they can program it to drive like a race car or a Miata. some hydraulics in the clutch to control it to make it stiff or soft...short or long travel...the shifter can be program to make it hard to shift or smooth like butter. dump the clutch you can stall the car or smoke the tires...

yeah, this could be fun. it is like a "real" video game.

we got three cars...an automatic tranny....a manual ...and an EV. I got it all covered :) but with three cars. they could make one all in one.

personally I enjoy how an EV drives. quiet, smooth (no shifting), and just stupid fast.
